I'm tired of all these stories on WP of depressed people. You should be thankful that your not starving to death in Africa or slowly dying from an awful disease.
So I've decided to make a happy thread. This thread is about the ADVANTAGES of being on the spectrum.
Here are some, I'd like you to add some more:
-Usually smarter then most NT
-Greater attention to detail
-When on a subject you enjoy you can have great conversations
More to come!
UPDATE: I worded this incorrectly. I've made an apology

I've heard this BS for years and do you know what I'm sick of it. If everyone was grateful for what they had how would things improve? If those in the civil rights movement were grateful for what had there would be no civil rights movement. There would be no American Revolution.
I'm sorry but I believe this whole be grateful for what you have, stay upbeat, this postitive attitude bullshit needs to go away. There is another part you and those with "be grateful" beliefs have and that is everything you could have could be taken away at anytime and depending on the situation it could happen at the drop of a dime.
It could end up where that person ends up losing everything and starves in the street. This mentality of being grateful goes against any logic I understand. |

Seriously, you expect to write about positive things under such a title?
Anyway, my special interests and achievements do make me feel good, this is not true for many if not all NTs. _________________ Another non-English speaking - DX'd at age 38

Jeebuss! That's all we need; more smarmy, condescending, judgmental guilt-trippery from a self-appointed expert on depression and all things Aspie - exactly the kind of NT behavior that drove us all to become members of WrongPlanet in the first place!

The reason people are so sad here is because its somewhere that people can talk about the negative parts and generally be understood, accepted, and still feel safe.
It's not that we're all constantly depressed (though there are quite a few of us on here with depression), its that positive things are far easier to share in other places, while somewhere like this is needed for some of us to feel safe.
Also, discussing the "negative things" allow us to discuss others' coping mechanisms, allowing for us to learn from others' experiences. And when that can't be done, "shared pain is lessened, shared joy increased", the shared pain aspect does matter too.
However, there are advantages and they are talked about as well. I don't necessarily agree with the advantages you've listed though.
One thing I can say that's positive though is that its because of my special interest in math that I can tutor people so effectively. Just knowing the subject doesn't get through to people as much, actually being passionate makes people far more interested in the subject. |

Being thankful one is not starving in africa does not cure depression. _________________ It's like alice in wonderland except, my names not alice and this is the real world not a dream. |

This website exists to help support people, so it's kind of expected to be depressing. Most people here have no one else to turn to, and they've got to let out their frustration somehow.
I think the best way to make this place happier is to try and help anyone who needs it in any way you know how. Sometimes it makes a difference just to know someone cares. |

Points for thought process, but penalty for execution. Try starting a thread like this:
"I've noticed that many of the threads here tend to focus on the negative aspects of Aspie behavior. So I wanted to to start one that focused on all the positive aspects - something we can all refer to when we're feeling down! I'll start!
1. *random happy thing
2. *another random happy thing
3. *yet another random happy thing
4. *you have the pattern now
Might also help to throw in a few smilies, and pictures of rainbows and kittens - or maybe that's just me, _________________ Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed. -- G. K. Chesterton
Aspie score: 131 of 200. NT score: 58 of 200. Likely an Aspie according to online tests, but diagnosed w/severe social anxiety. |

This is inane. What relevance does this have to any particular person's problems? Why don't they have any right to have problems just because someone, somewhere, has it worse? |

Not yelling at you, Zabriski. It's just that this kind of "positive thinking, white lightey, New Age, or Christian" kind of stuff basically says, shut up, you have no right to complain. It leaves people feeling sad, unsupported, and misunderstood. Not to mention, very alone. And angry. People do have the right to be sad. For some of us, this is the first time anyone understands why and might have a way to do something about it. Remember, for a lot of us older folks nobody even knew what AS was so we got a lot of grief growing up, and even still. That's why it's hard to not get mad about the positive thinking stuff. _________________ Aspie 176/200 NT 34/200 Very likely an Aspie

I don't mean to offend but that's quite ignorant of you. You are still young and should know there are things beyond your reach you should just respect. This will not be a happy thread, there is a ton already about the advantages.. Title is a no-no.
You are smart, you should know better than to judge people on superficial emotions you get. Depression in most cases is involuntary. |
