Finally, the President has come out on the right side of history regarding gay marriage.
I just hope it won't lose him the election.
Discuss.

Yay!

Of course it won't cost him the election, it was a shrewd and well-timed political maneuver. (Not doubting his sincerity at all.)
Obama is exceptional at explaining political ideas to a broad audience using everyday language without sounding condescending. Over the coming months he will appeal to American values like freedom, equality, and civil rights in a way that will convince many undecideds.

I certainly hope so. If anything, the youth support, which seemed to be lackluster this time around, will probably be energized by this.
And if Obama does lose because of the gay marriage issue, at least he'll be losing for doing the right thing.

I am glad he did too.. He should denounce all laws that are created solely on religious doctrine and beliefs. which are even disputed by some members of said religions.

The only thing I wonder about is whether Biden's comment a few days ago was scripted, or if he inadvertently forced OB's hand.

He's pulled an amazing long con on us is his mouth doesn't actually outrun his brain as often as it seems.

Well, that, and universal healthcare.

President Obama is a moderate and a centrist. And yes, I'm quite aware that so-called 'conservatives' make wild claims to the contrary (what is it that you're 'conserving'? Wink )

Gay rights is now a mainstream issue. I think currently somewhat more than 50% of Americans think gay persons should have the same right to marry as anyone else.

Last I heard was 50% thought gay marriage should be legal, 48% thought it shouldn't, and 2% were unsure.

If 98% thought it should be illegal and only 2% supported it, I would still argue it should be legal, as a civil rights issue. An unpopular minority should not be denied equal civil rights simply on the basis of being an unpopular minority, in my opinion. Our legal system is not based on "what is 51% popular?" as a guiding principle!

Not in North Carolina, according to the amendment that just passed. I think that the president's statement was in protest to NC, as it came very quickly afterwards. If more than 50% think that, then they are not voting, as there are several other states with amendments or statutes that have been passed by popular vote to ban same sex marriage.
