It sometimes occurs to me that I'm unusual in that, I only wear jeans. And I recently (re)introducted jumpers/sweatshirts without hoods back into my wardrobe.
For the best bit of 15? years I've wore jeans almost all the time. For the best bit of 6 years I've mostly wore hoodies.
I feel uncomfortable leaving the house without wearing a jacket, and only within the past few years have I been able to wear a light summer appropriate jacket.
I like the idea of following fashion, however I'm totally clueless on how to actually go for it, when I was younger I disliked a lot of different clothing materials (ironically, jeans! however I got out of that at an earlyish age - before wearing jeans I only liked tracksuit bottoms.)
Anyway, I want to start buying different clothing (and actually wear it too!) but I don't know how to begin...
I know I can 'just walk into a shop and buy something' but hopefully some people will understand my reasons behind it and the issue I have?
Any suggestions? |

No idea how to help you break out of your clothing habits--my wardrobe is almost entirely made up of T-shirts, jeans, shorts, and hoodies. I'll occasionally buy something different...and then proceed to never wear it. To say that I'm set in my ways would be a gross understatement. |

Eh fashion, tried that. Had to keep running to catch up.
I wear jeans mostly too and a few khaki pants. I wear hoodies, both zipped up and without a zipper, army style jackets with my own AF patches sewn on (poorly) and track jackets. Love the track jackets.
I get most of my t-shirts from Tee Fury. Geeks shirts are cool.
I have one jacket that is considered fashionable. It's a light black zip up jacket. It's itchy.
Oh and I have a warm grey military style jacket but I hate wearing heavy clothes. Even in cold weather I end up sweating.
For what it's worth, I think the men's fashion around today is pretty well..crap. It's just a continuation of the indie scene mixed into club culture. I don't mind the winter clothes though. What I really like on guys is the rocker/cowboy late 60's type of look. It helps to be in a band.
Hoodies are pretty cool. I've been getting through this cold pre-winter days in them. I've got my eyes on a Doctor Who one. _________________ My autism blog - http://latedx.wordpress.com

Is it the feel of things that puts you off? There are some materials that I just cannot wear, everything needs to be soft and tight fitting and stretchy otherwise I just want to rip my clothes off all the time, which is never a good thing!
Could you go into shops and 'feel' some of the clothes just to make sure you like them? I like to research what clothes I am going to buy on the internet first, so I have an idea what I am looking for. If you see something you like the look of on someone else then you could hunt for it online first to see different styles and get used to the idea. When I do eventually buy new clothes I usually wear them around the house a bit so I am used to them. Perhaps that would work for you? |

I hate shopping for clothes, because too many times I could not wear them like I thought I could, and end up wearing a few of the same clothes over and over (or the same pair of pants). I can only wear what I feel comfortable and good in.
When I was a kid I refused to wear jeans because I sat in dog crap with them on and didn't know right away. I ended up associating jeans with dog crap. So, I think it took me years to wear jeans again. But I like them now. |

I have been wearing nothing but jeans for years and years, there is absolutely nothing else I would rather wear. I do wear shorts in the summer sometimes but I hate it. I have also been wearing only short-sleeved tops for a long time now. Even in the winter I hate to wear long sleeves (except my winter coat, of course). What's the point of getting different clothes if you just wear them once and then stuff them in the back of your dresser drawer never to even look at them again. Unlike most women, I see no point. If you like wearing it, it's age and gender-appropriate, and isn't sexually revealing or exposes you too much to the elements then wear what you like not what everyone says you should like.
Maybe the real reason I have to always wear jeans because when I was really young I wanted to wear them, but my mother said I couldn't because I was too FAT. She told me if I lost at least twenty pounds and dieted and exercised with her every day I could wear jeans. It wasn't until I was around 12 and they finally came out with plus-size jeans that I got to wear them. |

select the desired style/fabric then start by wearing it around the house, starting with short periods of time. When you are comfortable with the garment around the house, wear it for a quick trip to the store during a low traffic time period. build from there.
repeat with another desired style/fabric. |

I don't know how old you are, so I really can't tell you how to dress. Don't go for the teen/early 20's look if you are older than that. No sagging, no gangsta, none of that. I personally think that something like khakis and polo shirts look nice, as well as button down shirts. Go for that look. Loafers or Topsiders though, not tennis shoes with them. _________________ Frances

I've figured out that I can buy clothes online, try them on at home, and send back the ones that don't fit. That has made clothes shopping more tolerable.
When in fashion doubt, I send a NT a picture and ask their advice. _________________ Colorado Meetups http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/co_as_meetup/ |

So? I've never seen my dad not wearing jeans, and he's neurotypical.
I wear hoodies all the time. I don't feel right when wearing a jumper without a hood attached to it. Every jumper I wear must have a hood. f**k knows what I'm going to do if I wind up in a job where you can wear your own clothes but not allowed hoods. I won't know what to do. I hate things with just collars. What I'd do is endure a day of clothes shopping to buy some jumpers without hoods, and just go to work wearing a scarf all the time (except from in the warmer weather, where I can just wear a T-shirt). _________________ Real gender: Female

Hi, I'm D, and I only wear the same type of clothes too!
I will actually go cold and shivering if I can't wear what's in my routine due to it being dirty or something. They really mean it when they have "routine" listed as a symptom. |

In warmer weather I wear jeans, a tee shirt and army boots. In colder weather I add a long sleeved shirt. This hasn't changed in the last 20+ years. _________________ I stopped fighting my inner demons. We're on the same side now. |

| Ya, I do this. I think it is only when I was in school and had to wear uniform, that I have not worn jeans. I wear joggers when I'm lounging in the house, but if I leave to go anywhere then I wear jeans ... 100% of the time. I also wish I would get round to wearing something different but clothes seem very complicated things. It's pretty embarrassing because I was once invited to a dinner here, but in the invitation the person specifically told me that it was a non-jean and non-trainer occasion (I know this maybe reads offensive, but it was kindly meant). Yeah ... clothes ... one day maybe. |

This is perfect
I've been stuck in the same clothes forever, but I'm trying to upgrade things myself. But, don't change what you like for fashion - if you are comfortable and happy then stick with jeans (or whatever it is someone likes). I'm trying new things because I'm not content.
Ah and it's summer again. I dread it every year on some level. I don't want to take my jumpers off. |
