I was talking with one of the guests who had asked me a question that i didnt know how to answer so i asked him to wait while i got my manager. when i returned with my manager the guest was complaining about how i was not making "easy coversation" later on i got an earful about how important it is to talk to the guests.

when i applied for this job i had requested to either be put on breakfast or laundery( less stressful and dont have to deal with constant change in routine) at the time the positions were all full except for the front desk and i am living on my own so i could not pass up the job.

i feel like i am stuck in a tough spot. i have requested yet again to be moved as soon as a spot opens to a more practical position

Wow, bit strange of the guest; I would have thought you were being helpful? (unless the question was 'nice day, isn't it?')

I suppose at the front desk, you are probably expected to smile and comment on the weather/how are they today? etc. etc.

Make a list of topics (watch what the other front desk people do). That way you will have a list to fall back on (nice weather, fine day, freindly remarks about pets, children etc.).

Try to watch what other people do in similar positions (movies and real life) and imitate.

Do not do as they do in Fawlty towers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xnNhzgcWTk Rolling Eyes

I hope you get transferred soon cat

Aspects of the job, such as how important it is to make easy conversation with the guests, really should be indicated on starting a job. Were they? Or in your case, being transferred to the front desk. Otherwise I guess it's not Aspie friendly to put you in a new position and expect you to know these requirements right away. I strongly feel it is not acceptable to scold employees, as this might cause trauma to the employee.

Whatever the requirements are, I agree this is just a quirk of the guest - who could literally be anyone.

thank you for all the help no the reqirements were not specified before i was abruptly moved to a different position also i was tolk upon moving that it was just temporary until they found a replacement. this was over three weeks ago. since then they have been making me pick up more shifts and now a few times a week i have double to tripple shifts which means i am working between 14 and 22 hours in any given day. if i am super lucky i get an 8 hour day. i feel powerless because there is nothing i can do about it like i said i cant quit working here because i live on my own and have rent to pay.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do, some people just wont like you no matter what you do. They will always find something wrong and there is nothing you can do to change this. Some people just dont initially like aspies. Don't worry about them.

When your boss scolds you always say I'll do better boss and do your best. But the truth is its not your fault and you really cannot change other peoples predetermined opinions with such short encounters.

Keep trying to move to a better position, that's very good Smile.

Sounds like working a Wallmart style of work scheduling, as you say your effectively working very long hours. When I get exhausted I cannot do very well in social arena. Those things I fake become impossible, and all those nutty aspie traits all come out when the mind and body are too tired.
