Why does it matter? are you worried about some stereotypes that autism has?

Asperger's has stereotypes too.

Maybe those stereotypes fit you better, but you are trying to force stereotypes on others by trying to avoid other stereotypes, rather than fighting to reduce or eliminate the stereotypes.

I'm autistic. The diagnosis I've been given happens to have been Asperger's Syndrome, but I'm autistic.

Now it's time for a lesson in American Law. It's not that simple in the US because this new diagnosis solidifies our protections as cited in the Americans With Disabilities Act. This is viewed as positive in the law school I attend. To sign such a petition would be illogical.

Frankly I think that is a silly reason. Nearly everything is stereotyped. Being a man is stereotyped, people with blonde hair are stereotyped, smart people, geeks, blind people, people with cerebal palsy are stereotyped.

Stereotypes exist to help people better understand a thing instantly and generally.

I know that when describing Aspergers a lot of people say 'It's a mild form of Autism', so why not just have it be a mild level of Autistic disorder?
It's on the Autistic spectrum. If you have Aspergers you are Autistic. You may not be 'as Autistic' as a person with nonverbal 'classic' Autism, but that's why you have mild level Autism.

I think the changes are excellent, and that they will make people better understand that Aspergers is a handicap. Yes there are positives that come a long with it, for some people, but the same can be said of Bipolar - my mother is, and she greatly enjoys her emotional upswings. That doesn't make bipolar any less of a debilitating mental illness (at least in my mother's case, as she has severe bipolar with psychotic features).

Also, as an aside, I cannot pronounce Aspergers. I can pronounce Autistic. This has influenced my point of view on the matter somewhat.

tbh I feel a bit insulted by this -__-

I'm a bit more severe than Aspergers (HFA) in the sense that i can rarely utter more than a sentence or two without making myself sounding like an idiot When i talk to people. I am often thought to be retarded by my peers because of it so if i can handle people thinking i`m retarded i`m sure you can handle being ``mildly autistic``

These young people are creative; a name change with a 'merging of diagnoses' might not accomplish what the DSM expects.....

Example conversation:

Sue: I have an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Josh: I thought it was a spectrum. How can you have "an" Autism Spectrum Disorder ? Plus, you don't look like you're on the spectrum.

Sue: I have the same Autism Spectrum Disorder THAT Einstein, Mozart, Tesla, and many others had.

Josh: What the hell are you talking about ????!!! Those guys are alleged to have had Aspergers which no longer exists as a diagnosis in the DSM.

Sue: They were levels ONES, like me.

Josh: WTF!!!!?????

Sue: I scored a severity level 1 on my ASD diagnosis so I am a LEVEL ONE.

Josh(who is a autism research scientist with a PH.D): Well, I'll be damned.
