| to be honest I don't understand the stuff that well either but my gut response to anything to do with Europe is that we should definitely be part of it as much as we can - you're absolutely right AA, the only chance the world has of not becoming culturally/militarily American and economically Chinese is for there to be a strong, unified Europe: I don't really care about the relative strength or weakness of the UK economy and I certainly don't care about some feeble sense of British 'identitiy'. I don't relate to being British at all, I think we'd be much better off becoming more European. England sucks, IMO. |

Mainly because of negativity/conformity/cynicism/reserve/not saying what you think/social barriers/emotional distance and general deadness.
Other cultures seem more attractive to me - I love Turkey, people are so warm and expressive and will just take you as you are. I've no great love for the US politically but I've spent some time there and people are so positive and just believe if you want to do something you can do it whereas here they will shoot you down for even thinking about it.
Pretty much it really. |

Personally, being American, I despise the US and especially politics and now the ultimate Conservative Republicans. The US scares the shite out of me now and I want to move.
rumio, I'm sure the UK is FAR from perfect. But I am sincerely considering moving there and getting out of this hell hole.
I also hate that America likes to tear anything down that seems over 40 years old by and large. And a lot of bigotry. And honestly, the inner cities are scary as hell.
Give me Jack the Ripper any day.

I know what you mean Sophist, I'm a lot less keen on the US than I used to be. Don't get me wrong - I've never been into it politically and in so many of it's cultural aspects but there is an energy there that I've always enjoyed. As it happens I'm flying out for another visit next week ( upstate NY, it's a family thing) and I'm really a lot less comfortable this time given the way things have gone over the last few years (also not looking forward to customs which I'm told is a nightmare these days, I'm flying into Newark).
But some of the best music and literature has come out of the States in the last few decades and it's that kind of spirit that appeals to me.
Also I love tall buildings, can't help it, I just do. They're putting some up in Manchester at the moment but I'm digressing now. |

as I type this I'm sat at my desk at work just off Piccadilly gardens in the centre of Manchester and I've lived in the city since 1989 so I guess you're right apart from you're wrong
I meant TALL buildings dude ie Beetham Tower on Deansgate etc plus 2 or 3 others in the pipeline. But I like tower cranes too so now you're talking... |

Thats the sort of thing that must be given top priority, above competing with other contrys. If these other contrys sore that as well, there woodnt be a problem ennyway. |

Workers in France have too many rights. It's getting that way in the UK, too. Come up with some spurious instance of racism, sexism, or a minor accident, and the law is such that the employer is guilty until proven innocent. That's wrong. Plain and simple. People should start taking more responsibility for themselves rather than assuming the State or employer's going to look after them. In socialist Euroland, the more "rights" you get, the more you become beholden to the system, and prone to it's manipulation.

Did you ever see the Second Severn Crossing under construction? The tower cranes on the RC pylons to the cable-stayed section? Some view from up there, I bet!

Reminds me of when I was a lad (not that long ago  ) . I worked on a site where every morning at 7.00, the 25stone crane driver would start the great ascent. Must of took him all of half an hour. At 10a.m and 1p.m, he'd lower a bucket down on a very long chord. The tea boy would place bacon sandwiches in it, which would be hauled up. At the end of the shift, he'd lower what was left back down along with a bottle of piss! |

I do see what you meen ascan. I still think its better to have the rites thogh. After all, the only thing that sistem can do is take those rites away, which is no worse than what you say. |
