wolves kill 10s of people every year in the united states
mostly in the more wild states like Alaska
wolves are very big and weigh more than your average person and in a pack you dont stand a chance without a firearm

Still much more likely to die from a car crash.
This is why I support open carry laws here in Michigan.
We already have wolf packs in the UP.

I think the wolf population needs to recover they're greatly in danger they are no real threat to humans unless they encroach on a wolf packs territory otherwise they have no interest in humans and usually avoid them.

An earlier poster mentioned wolf hybrids,I'm not sure if they are a good idea for pets, they don't have a fear of man,we had one attack a goat at night,it had the goat by the throat and was slinging it around. My ex had to shoot it.The next day when we looked at it there was a collar on it.We disposed of it quietly. If there are enough deer wolves are big cats really are not a problem for humans.Still,a small child would always be considered prey.
I can see how they would be a danger in Alaska, but in more temperate climates there's always food.

I have two high content wolf husky hybrids. They can be as*holes sometimes, but they are also the biggest babies about things. They don't protect me, I protect them. They are fairly good guard dogs decoration wise. People see them and don't want to come near. Of course once they get to know them, they know they are nothing to be afraid of. They don't hurt people at all, and are no threat to them, but they will kill any other dog they get their hands on, except new pets we bring in here and make them be nice to. They usually avoid the new pet as long as possible, then just tolerate it. At the moment the white one growls and snarls at the new puppy. We punish him for that. We fuss at him, pop him on the nose, and make him go to bed.

Whose afraid of the big bad wolf? Not I, Not I, Not I (or anybody whose actually met them)

Two people have been attacked by wild wolves since the turn of the century (one of them died) in the US. In terms of size, wolves of 120-130 lbs in Scandinavia are not uncommon (some are up to 190 lbs); none of them have ever killed anyone since WWII.

Most wolves are actually pretty skiddish unless you are near their den.

How do you know wolves won't be worse than elk?
It's not like coyotes are of much benefit.

Wolves will take care of the Coyote problem. The real problem with introducing wolves, or any other predator species in an area with dense human population is that they will become habituated to people, and will take out dogs and cats that people keep as pets. --There may also be attacks on people as well due to human habituation, as well as scarcity of other food sources.

Allegedly wolves from Quebec and the Canadian maritimes are already here in Maine, though I don't know if they're a transient population, or if they are establishing packs.

They really won't pose that much of a problem in northern Maine, (where they are purported to be) due to a relatively sparse population. The probems will start to arise when they move into areas with denser population.

I think part of probem as well is the overpopulation of the dominant species, which is a problem that does not appear to be abating any time soon.

Voted 'I am the wolf' ... at least I try to be ...
A lone wolf in any case.
I live in the UK (in fact, close to Humphrey Head, where the last wolf in England was killed in the 14th century), and would like to see wolves reintroduced here, at first in the Scottish Highlands, but eventually in some of the wilder areas in the rest of the country. They would likely prey on livestock, in hill farms, however, hill farming is unprofitable and the only reason many of these hill farms exist is because of government subsidies which exist in part to keep the landscape clear, whilst the hills and mountains in their natural state are forested. Loss of biodiversity in highland areas is happening faster than the average across the UK.

http://www.monbiot.com/2013/10/18/thinking-like-a-forest/
http://www.monbiot.com/2013/05/23/whats-missing-from-this-picture/
(lefties, don't be put off by the title of the first link, it is referring to the hypocrisy of the Conservative government in cutting benefits whilst allowing landowners to receive massive subsidies).
Reintroduction of wolves would help the ecosystem to recover, through the introduction of an apex predator missing from the ecosystem. They would keep deer from overgrazing, allowing plants to recover, giving cover to other animals, which in turn allows a recovery in their natural predators. The recovery in plants would also slow rivers by clogging their banks and prevent them from overflowing by interception and evapo-transpiration, preventing flooding and giving waterside life life such as beavers more of a chance. Before you dismiss this as wild speculation, consider how this is a sound ecological principle called a 'trophic cascade', has been observed in Yellowstone National Park in the US, and there is no reason it would not happen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trophic_cascade#Terrestrial_trophic_cascades

The average coyote around here has significant wolf ancestry; not all exhibit wolfy behaviors but some do run in packs, howl/yip together and hunt large prey together (I haven't seen the last personally but was told of it by a local farmer who had to scare the pack away from livestock.) So wolves do live on here, in a way.
