Do you love or hate having aspergers/autism?

Okay... In some ways, yes i dislike having it sometimes, but I dont hate it....
What I dislike about it is the fact that I have troubles with getting nervous around crowds, do unusual things, become really sensitive, socially awkard etc.

The thing i love about it is the fact that its gotten me a place in college, im constantly creative, apprecated for what i can do...
Very Happy

Anyone else have those feeling?

I go back and forth with this. On the days that I see my neighbors give each other weird looks when I go by, I hate it. On the days that I am able to see and enjoy things that mainstream people do not, I love it.

can't there be another choice, like glad I found out why I am what I am, accept myself and work on my flaws? I neither hate it or love it. it just is.

I hate it. Cure me please.

The thing is, I know people who are interesting, creative, intelligent and have a unique viewpoint outside of mainstream society who are NOT autistic. They have social and emotional competence and are not plagued by sensory issues. Being neurotypical does not automatically mean: BORING.
I think that a lot of people here make that false assumption.

I hate what AS has done to me.

I do get what ur saying, in a way that's kinda like my problem because one minute I like being autistic and then the next I don't for whatever the reason?

Exactly. I would like to be able to understand "normies" a little better, but not if that means losing any good or useful characteristic I already have ... and learning about my AS/HFA has taken a lot of pressure off me on both sides of that matter. Other people can now be whatever they are without having to watch out for criticism from me, and people who still try to say I am their problem after I have told them about myself now quickly get told what to go do to themselves at their very next opportunity ... and yes, I still have some work to do along the line of attitude there!

It depends.

I like being able to work through certain things easily that people stress over about. But I hate being clumsy and not being to fully understand what people are saying because I'm lost in my thoughts.

That is a good way to put it. Being autistic constitutes one shade of humanity, and just as the world would be a less full place without a particular shade of green or grey, the world would be a little more empty without the autists.

So, does it really matter whether or not we hate having autism/aspergers? Acacia said that there are many people who are unique and interesting who are not autistic. There are also a lot of people who are unhappy and hate themselves and are not autistic, too.
But they're stuck being themselves and so are we, whether we like it or not!

I love myself in a way, and if I knew aspergers is somehow central to my personality, I'd hesitate to be rid of asperger's.
If I could push a button and have been neurotypical all my life, I'd probably do it. If I could get rid of it right now and just keep living from my current point in life, I probably wouldn't. I've learned most of what I was born without. And I'd still have the bitter memories.
I suspect my own psychological barriers are more inhibitory to me than aspergers at this point.

This question is always so confusing for me. I often think about how much easier my life would be if I was an NT, but then I have to think about my talents - would they still exist if I wasn't an aspie? How much different would my personality be? Would I physically be any different? So frustrating.

I really don't want to hate having AS because I know it will be with me forever, and I don't want to live in a constant state of depression. But when I have meltdowns there are times when I wish I didn't have it.
You've got to live your life as best you can, so I neither love it or hate it. It can be a hindrance at times and at other times it's given me a few good talents. If I was social all the time then I probably wouldn't spend as much time to explore these talents.

When I was younger, I hated it. The older I got, though, the more I realize, that's a part of me, and I might as well utilize it to my advantage. Smile
