Absolutely all cultures? What about tribal societies and their body modifications

I don't really find those women posted all that attractive. I find them rather homely and plain, looks wise. They look quite average. I bet they have great talents though!

I agree, they lack the features like high cheekbones and defined faces like this. On that note, you guys going for less pretty girls doesn't mean they have better personalities so you might as well go for pretty women.

These cultures do not prefer hourglass-shaped women if food is plentiful?

Her face has no personality however. By this I mean she could be a waxwork or a mannequin.

Have you seen pictures of Amazonian tribeswomen with enlarged lobes and lips or African tribeswomen with elongated necks? Also I dont believe that your aesthetic tastes change based on how much youve eaten XD

Asian and European men rate the same European women as the most attractive. Studies have also shown that both white and black men tend to prefer mixed-race women over women from their own race.

Ancient Greek statue of Aphrodite (Greek states with a good infrastructure typically had plenty of food):

Kurgan is right, beauty standards didn't change in history as much as what some people claim, this started with the misinterpretation of Venus of Willendorf and other Venus figurines- which were most probably symbols of Fertility rather than beauty (and there's no much evidence for either since they are very ancient).

However, most love/lust goddesses statues depicted slender-hourglass women.

Like Ishtar of Babylon.

Quote:
Several studies have suggested that people are generally attracted to people who look like them[202] and they generally evaluate faces that exhibit features of their own ethnic or racial group as being more attractive.[151] Although both men and women use children's "facial resemblance" to themselves in "attractiveness judgments," a greater percentage of women in one study (37% n=30) found hypothetical children whose faces were "self-morphs" of themselves as most attractive when compared to men (30% n=23).[203] The more similar a judged person is toward the judging person, the more the former is liked. However, this effect can be reversed. This might depend on how attractiveness is conceptualized: similar members (compared to dissimilar ones) of the opposite sex are judged as more likable in a prosocial sense. Again, findings are more ambiguous when looking for the desiring, pleasure related component of attractiveness.[204] This might be influenced by the measure one uses (subjective ratings can differ from the way one actually reacts) and by situational factors: while men usually prefer women whose face resembles their own, this effect can reverse under stress, when dissimilar females are preferred.

^^ I think the beauty standards didn't much change for men either (lean muscular)- the Bieber example isn't much representative because he's liked mostly by teens (since he's well...looks like a teen too).

I think that that is a too neat. Beauty standards do seem to change over time sometimes significantly. Its certainly true but only partly

It changed in men after birth control pills and mass media became more widespread (compare Georg Hackenschmidt to Justin Bieber, for instance), but beauty standards in women have changed very little apart from haircuts. Absolutely all cultures, at all times given that food was plentiful, valued hourglass figures with large eyes, small noses, small jaws, and typical feminine features.

All this says is that our perceptions of beauty are affected by cultural norms which are affected by the environment. I don't think that means one set of norms is more or less legitimate than another. It's not like having "plentiful" food is a default state of nature that lets us get at an objective viewpoint on what's attractive :) It just goes to show that beauty is subjective and differs widely according to many factors.

You can't tell me a lady with a 20 inch waist and a thigh gap is more likely to be fertile than one with saggy breasts and belly and stretch marks on her hips because she's already borne a healthy child surely :) Yet which one do men in the Western world fantasize about? The one they've been bombarded with since they were born!

I am not sexually attracted to women, but I find the women whose pictures were posted very beautiful and more interesting than what might be "conventional" beauties. I also think Maggie Gylenhaal is very attractive, and I second the earlier mention of Billie Holiday :)

Frida Kahlo is also a good example :)

Sagging breasts are a sign of aging and a large belly is a sign of either too much fat or too much male hormones, both of which will stall fertility. Notice how Marilyn Monroe and Zooey Deschanel have very similar meassurements.

I have yet to see a woman who looks better with a mustache and a monobrow. ;)

65 years ago, Steve Reeves was considered to be one of the most attractive men in the world, by teenage girls, among others.

Agreed. A very harsh and pointy face. Not feminine at all, like most fashion models. I find none of the women in this thread naturally beautiful and feminine.

Maggie Gyllenhaal isn't unconventionally , she's conventionally beautiful.

I think that the difference between conventionally attractive and unconventionally attractive is the opinions of the majority, if the majority of people, especially people of the opposite sex, think that this X person is attractive then he/she's conventionally attractive , while unconventionally attractive is only seen attractive by few individuals or a minority of people.

That's why celebs like Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are considered conventionally beautiful, because the majority of the opposite sex think so.

I used to be unconventionally attractive when I was younger, but now I am just unconventional. :hmph:
