When I hear certain epithets, I immediately think of a gentleman, now quite elderly, with whom I had the honor of spending some time. He earned a Purple Heart at the Chosin Reservoir, he marched with Martin Luther King ? I saw the pictures ? he eventually earned a degree in economics and began making a name for himself in business. Being black, he had to fight racism every step of the way. We didn't talk politics much ? history, Mozart, and Patrick O'Brian were of greater interest to both of us ? but he did say at one point that he'd essentially given up on what he called the party of race hustlers and poverty pimps. Three guesses as to which party he meant.

And yes, there were many along the way who called him an Uncle Tom, and others who called him by a different phrase beginning with "uppity" and having much the same meaning. In every case the speaker only revealed the ignorance and hatred in his own soul.

I can say for a fact, that the "party of race hustlers and poverty pimps" by word and deed is more on my side that the GOP will ever be.

thank you for calling me racist when I merely pointed out that fellow always sides against the interests of the working class of which black folk are a large part.

Well, you and Bill were calling me a bully earlier, so now we're even.

Really though, what do you call it when someone thinks all people of a certain race should think and act a certain way, and that when they deviate from that they must be crazy or corrupt? I have my share of disagreements with Clarance Thomas, many of them considering sentencing reform, an area that largely impacts minorities, but I would never say that he's "out to get black people", that would be ridiculous and grossly unfair to the man. I don't think of him any differently than I do the other justices, why does his race matter at all?

I'm calling him insane because he believes atheists have no right to hold public office. If I recall correctly, he would oppose you if you wanted to serve in government. How is that at all right?

You started up before the atheism thing came to light, and it was you and blabby that made an issue of the man's race in the first case, to me he's just another conservative who's entitled to his own opinions, whatever they may be. I notice you keep trying this thing where you attempt to tie me specifically to something by pointing out someone who would have a problem with me personally; really, I don't care, my principals are not about me personally, but about what I think is right. I support all sorts of positions that are of no benefit to me personally, and even some that could have some negative impact on me, again, going by what I think is right, not by what I think is best for me individually.

There's no intent about it, you got pissed off and butthurt because I cornered you on something, so you lashed out by lying about me, and then tried to back away without actually taking any responsibility. You want conciliatory, try not lying about people, that's generally a good start.

Also, thanks for proving my point about simply dismissing criticisms you can't answer.

You know, trying to shame me isn't going to get you anywhere, and in fact will only make me more pissed off.

I'm sure I do, but please, define gauche-ness.

sorry- I was looking for a word to indicate the clueless haughtiness to mention CEOS as though they were the only ones who mattered to her. she is plenty smart enough to be able to understand this, so I chalk it up to simple arrogance and classism.
