| Probably 60's and 70's, but there is good stuff in every era. Certain eras also have a lot of bad stuff, like 2000 and the 80's. |

I like music from most of the eras given as an option in the poll. The 70's and the 80's bein the biggest. _________________ Ah yes... that hurricane of hate and anger still swirls with reckless abandon within the recess of my soul... may the peace and light in the center of that never-ending storm lead me to that promised paradise... I'd say the 80s. _________________ "It's not the great who are strong, it's the strong who are great." -Albel Nox (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time) |

There's great stuff to be found in them all, but there's something about the music of the first half of the 20th century - 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s that I find very calming and relaxing. Even with two major wars and the great depression, they truly were simpler times.
It's fascinating how, when you begin to listen to popular music era by era you get a better sense of the cultural context and you can hear the social stress level gradually increasing over the years as if it were an actual audible background noise within the music itself.
Equally interesting is the pop culture explosion in the 60s, when everything change literally overnight. You can hear the rise of rock'n'roll throughout the latter fifties and into the early sixties as a gradual evolution. Even the appearance of the Beatles wasn't a radical change at first. 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand', 'She Loves You' and "Love Me Do' weren't a huge departure from what groups like The Beach Boys were already doing. But then Bob Dylan introduced them to pot - and everything changed. The opening note of "I Feel Fine" with the feedback guitar was the shot heard round the world. And that influence is still with us today.
Oops. Obsessive rant, sorry. _________________ "I don't mean to sound bitter, cynical or cruel - but I am, so that's how it comes out."

As for popular music, the 60's and 70's were the best IMO. The 80's,90's, and 00's had/have great music, just not necessarily the "top 40" material.
Of course if I had to rate an era over the entire history of music I would probably go with the classical era.

I can't pick just one decade, I tend to like '70s through '90s the most, and a bit of '00s stuff. However, it almost seems that the year my preferred music is recorded is inversely proportional to how popular it is. _________________ Well. That was a hastily unloaded pile of incoherence. |

I'd say the late 70's to about '85 or so, but without the synthesisers. That being said, truly good music is timeless, however the chances of hearing good music on the radio aren't that good. _________________ "Blessed are the Distinctly Alien, for they shall inherit the Earth." -- Genesis P.
