I live on the water, I grew up on the water, but ever since I was a baby I would scream, and cry and hate baths, showers, swimming, or anything of that sort. I never knew what was wrong. I just recently found out its a sensory thing. I hate the feel of water on me, or if a dog is licking me it gives me horrible sensations and I have a serious panic attack. When I get in to my lagoon to go swimming I have to stay in there like 5mins until I stop having a panic attack. I always thought it was because I was afraid to drown, because when I was younger alot of people thought it would be funny to drown me, and watch me suffer under water. Also I watched one of my friends almost die in water, so I thought those two could trigger my problem, but even in the shower, I can't stay under running water that long, I panic and get goosebumps, I stop breatheing, my heart starts hurting, my head starts hurting, its crazy. It doesn't stop me though, I still go swimming, and take showers at least once a day, it just makes my water activities alittle longer. I was just wondering if anybody else has a sensory problem like that? If so, which sensory problem really affects your life the most?

I used to hate getting my hair washed. i think I have always disliked it from day one. I think my mother told me I hated getting my hair washed when I was a baby. It could have been a sensory issue for me too. I remember how much it would frighten me when it would happen and it was also because I had fear of getting water in my ears and them hurting. But as I got older I got used to getting my hair washed and I didn't mind it anymore. My mother had to work with me and she had to find ways to wash my hair without me being scared.

But I hate water getting splashed in my face from other poeple, that's why I don't go water rafting becuse of those water fights they have to do. It feels like I am being forced into some torture chamber but with mother nature I don't feel that way. Maybe because I'm in control.

I have an aversion to certain fabrics. My back constantly itches and it's so annoying. It's itching right now.

Loud noises. Actually, at times, any noises.

COLD WATER!!! AGH! I went rafting with my sister and I fell out of the boat. The water was freezing! I actually walked through bushes with thorns on them rather than go through that evil river.

I hate being hot and sweaty and sticky. And sweaty artificial fabrics make it horrifically worse.

Tags in the back of shirts drive me insane.

Also having dirt or food, or any other gunky substance on my hands bothers me a lot. I get upset if it happens in a situation in which I can't wash it off.

I have to sleep with my feet out of the blanket because they seem to get overheated under the covers. I used tohave to ask my mom not to tuck my sheets in at the foot.

I can't stand foods that are gooey or soggy. The texture gags me. If there is a gooey part it has to be accompanied by a crust of some sort or else I can not eat it.

Oh yeah.... I forgot about cold water. That's a big one. When my skin gets cold it gets sore to the touch and I become very irritable. I love to swim -- don't get me wrong. But I will not get in water unless the water temp is above about 80 degrees.

Can relate to the difficulty w/getting in or out of water, the transition is awful & gives me the skeezies. You can imagine what "skeezies" means just by how the word sounds. Strongly dislike getting rained on (leads to heavy, wet clothing next to my skin-makes me feel ill just thinking about it). Am always freezing when stepping out of shower, skin feels all tight & itchy. I love to swim, but getting out of there & being in a wet swimsuit totally unhinges me, can't even describe.
We only had bathtub (which I despised) in the home when I was a child. Family tried to wash my hair, the water got in my eyes & up my nose, which hurt & made me panic. Mother would threaten w/ the belt to get me to cooperate with taking baths. What a fricking nightmare that was...

For me, it's the whole food thing (smells, tastes, sights) that's my most obvious & huge obstacle. It's the one thing I've been aware of for longer than anything else, that set me apart from others.
Food is key in socializing, whether with family, friends, peers, or potential companions. Food is key in terms of simply meeting basic needs. I can't eat "like normal people do", which is a problem when others are around, but also just by myself.
My "comfort zone" of foods I can stand to consume is so narrow, it's ridiculous-it's progress that I've even been able to say this. Growing up, I had to constantly defend (against other people) my food choices-so I was unable to notice that the problem existed even in the absence of criticism from others. My "picky" behavior didn't go away when there was no one to give me a hard time about what I was (or wasn't) doing.

I can't think of any that effects my life because mine are minor and I can do anything. I'd say race cars and monster trucks but that's nothing. That's what ear plus are for and I don't need to go to them. It's not manditory.
