I HATE it!!!! It can be painful but mostly I'm just squeamish about it. I have made so many smear appointments I haven't kept. i've even driven to the surgery and then bottled it and driven home. I haven't voted in the poll because I don't really agree with either option. _________________ *it's been lovely but I have to scream now* |

me i can admit i never had one yet despite my age but it seems neurotypical doctors think that a person when tehy turn 18 they will go bananas and go find a man asap, well im not like that i dont plan on using any of the plumbing accept pee and have my mentrual cycles every month, im the kind of person who goes to doc only when i feel i need to when sick or badly injured,(docs can really turn a person into a hypocondriac)
the procedure for a pap smear yes is invasive and i dont feel comfortable having to be exposed and have things shoved up there, why dont they create a pee or maybe some take home test, or even draw blood instead of having another person create such torture to your sensitive and embarrassing to show parts??? _________________ <<"norton" antivirus |

| It is uncomfortable but not unbearable. All my docs know my dx's. However I'm lucky as mine seem to realize they should warm up the thing they use. So instead of using a cold thing which makes me flinch it's room temp or something. |

Too uncomfortable. It's not just the pain for me, it's just that I have a severe phobia of invasive medical procedures. I find going to any doctor terrifying just for the possibility of them doing something invasive.
I'll admit that I'm 21 and have been sexually active, but I've never had a pap and refuse to unless they'll give me IV sedation, like Versed. |

I agree with you, I'm 22, and sexually active also, and never had a pap. I won't do it, Its too weird, and like Miranda said, I got to be under sedation for it. He always sends appts for it, but heck no I won't go. With the lights, the busy waiting room, the weird nurse staring at me, and the doctor lookin at me, and all the noise, and then on top of that he wants to stick something up me.. I don't think so! |

Sometimes it's really bad, sometimes it's just unpleasant. Last time, it hurt so much I cried. But other times, I haven't really had a problem. I have the same issue with tampons. They hurt too much and I can't wear them. _________________ I don't do small talk. |

I've only had it done once, and it was so absolutely traumatic I'll NEVER do it again, unless there is an alternative, or if I'm tranquilized while it's done. _________________ Currently Reading: Survival by Juliet E. Czerneda

| a few years ago the surgery i was with was pestering me to have a smear test. i was extra freaked about it as i had suffered a rape a year before. i thought i would go for the appointment and explain so they would let me off. unfortunately when i did explain, traumatic enough in itself, the doctor, female if you can believe it, proceeded to tell me that i couldnt let it affect me my whole life and bullied me into letting her do it while i lay on the table and sobbed. i cycled home still sobbing and ended up crashing my bike, stumbling home all cuts and bruises. that was about 20 years ago and i never had one since. nuff said. raped by a woman with a stainless steel penis. |

Hi Ladies,
I can't believe what i have read, a pap smear should NOT be painful, i think the doctors/nurses you have seen should be ashamed!!
I've needed to have 2 smears since october(abnormal cell changes) and the nurse who saw to me was warm and sympathetic and more importantly she warmed up the speculum(it makes all the difference). As women we should not feel embarrassed if we are not happy with the service we recieve and please ask to see someone else if you are not happy/comfortable.
Sorry to sound like i'm nagging but a smear could save your life, it really is worth a little embarrassment in the long run.
Take care. |

It can be depending on the doctor and sensory issues. They have a little scraper they use and it is irritating but not too bad for me. It makes a difference that they warm part of the equipment. When it's cold I'm far more sensitive and react more. I think they realized when I'd flinch/startle before but some docs are just good and it's never an issue.
I agree on it being life saving. My sister had cervical cancer. After it was dealt with she had another child and it came back. She had to have a hysterectomy but she didn't die and it was caught probably just in time despite the pregnancy due to a smear. |

Never had one
Been too nervous to have anyone digging around down there.
Know I need to bite the bullet really.
Signed a form to say I wouldnt have one unless I decide to.. so they don't send those reminder letters anymore. |
