Everyone needs to see a professional if they suspect AS. A person needs to know for sure if they have it. There are a lot of people here who are self diagnosing and I can tell some do not have AS but other disorders instead. I have met people who insist AS is the cause of all their problems and I can tell straight away they have more serious things than AS that might be treatable with medications like BiPolar, personality disorders, schizo and OCD. When people become their own doctors they end up harming themselves because one cannot always be objective.

It helps just to know for sure the truth of the matter. It also helps to have a dr you can talk to about your problems. Plus it allows you to get on with your life if you know for sure why you are the way you are. Having a professional to guide you can also get a person past the obsessing relentlessly about being autistic. I've seen people so obsessed with their own self diagnosis that it takes over every facet of their lives and becomes all they can talk about and they tell everyone they ever knew about the diagnosis that they DON'T have.

Yeah, the best reason for me was just knowing for sure that I had it. I also have other reasons because I'm a student though. But I think it helps to get a professional diagnosis anyway really. When I was diagnosed, I also found out other things about myself, I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder at the time, and also topographical disorientation and dsexecutive syndrome, which I'd never even heard of before. So they won't just see you and then give you a Yes or a No, you could find out other information which would be useful to you and your family etc.

Ticker,

I'm glad you said that. I've noticed a lot of people on this forum tend to jump to point out those things that resemble AS in people who are wondering and it's not really helpful. I'd personally be much happier with people telling me the things I do that don't sound like AS. And until I get testing I won't really know. I'm hoping I can setup something with Dinklage. He's in my area and my real issue is differentiating NLD from AS. If some folks are right eventually there won't be so much of a concrete differentiation anyway.
