What's up folks. I'm a new member. My name is Andrew. I'm 23 and I've recently (within a year or two) come to the realization that I am autism spectrum/AS. I'm basically here to learn more about myself and about AS, as well as the possibility of making friends and acquaintances. Maybe give and receive some advice and some empathy and conversations that go "do you ever have this experience/feeling when..." "Oh yeah! I get that all the time" or whatever. Just to connect with people who are like me. I suppose that's what all animals do. They seek to find others like themselves.
From surfing the site for a little while, I'm quite surprised to find so many women here. Not to be weird, but even beautiful women. Who would have figured? Though, you know? It wouldn't surprise me if I came to find out that my last gf was HFA or AS. Well, anyway, some of you definitely have my interest and I would like to get to know the community better. There seems to be quite a different community, from which I might learn a lot.
What about me? I'm a pretty nice guy. I'm on my senior year of college. I look young (maybe 16 or 18, maybe I'll add a pic later). I like words. A lot of you like numb3rs. I think they're okay, but I'm horrible at math. I'm much better with words. Some say I'm a good writer, which I hope maybe some way down the road I might make use of. The weird thing is, though I'm pretty sure I'm AS, I'm not absolutely obsessive about any one thing. I like lots of things. I like running, lifting weights. I like reading books about science. Almost anything about science I like, though I find evolutionary biology particularly arresting. I love Richard Dawkins. I'm also very much interested in technology. I've read a few of Ray Kurzweil's books and I think a lot of the things he predicts will come true. Stuff about the singularity--since most of you are geeks, I'll assume a lot of you know what I'm talking about here. So I like writing and reading about technology and science and philosophy. I also like languages. I know a bit of French, German and I'm currently teaching myself Mandarin through CD.
What else... I should say that I don't think being an Aspie is a great thing. In low doses, it's okay, I suppose. But if some day there is a cure, I will definitely take it, or at least seriously consider it. Life, being an Aspie is hard and painful. I think most will agree.
Well, anyway, I look forward to partaking in discussion with you all. I have a feeling this will be a very weird and unnatural thing. A bunch of Aspies congregating together and having their own society. What will the social dynamics be like? A strange contemplation. But shitt, how much worse than real life could it be? |

I suppose I would agree to a point, but I'd add a couple of qualifiers. Firstly, that life as an NT looks about equally hard and painful. Secondly... I think life's roughly about as hard and painful as we permit it to be.
Glad to have you here! |

I don't like numbers and I suck at math. I think I have dyscalculia (not to be confused with dysgraphia, or trouble with writing) and have trouble with even the concept of time (seriously, I don't have "time" in my head - life is literally one blank canvas unless I look at the time constantly).
I like being Aspie, but hate being around Nt's (neurotypicals). Not that it's their fault or anything, but they make me feel stupid and inferior and all sorts of bad feelings that make me think even worse thoughts. Being alone, I feel normal.
Welcome to the board. |

Didn't get dx until a few years ago, so I can understand the uncertainty when one's first presented with idea that ASD label could be applied to oneself: both the "oh yeah, that's it at last!" & the "oh no, that's not me at all !" reactions.

frankwah, in another thread you mention living in New Hampshire. I live in Vermont, am originally from Maine.
You said learning about ASD's & thinking you might have one is a recent thing, so more info. can be found via these links:
http://iod.unh.edu/
(UNH institute on disability)
http://www.autism-society-nh.org/
(Autism society of NH)
http://users.rcn.com/aane12/index.html
(Asperger's assoc. of New England-they have regional chapters in each state)
Unfortunately for those of us beyond a certain age, it's tough to find anything ASD-related that resonates with us (diagnosed adults). From these links, you can find other ideas for what to search for-wish you luck in finding proper dx, be it ASD or otherwise. _________________ *"You cannot administer a wicked law impartially-it destroys everyone it touches, its violators as well as its upholders."* |

| Welcome to WP! Your profile sounds very similar to mine. I have a minor in math, but like science of all types esp. evolutionary bio and Richard Dawkins. My obsessions don't run that deep and I have a lot of "normal" interests such as running, writing classes and travel. You are right that being an aspie can be hard, but it gets better as you get older and learn to accept your own oddities and foibles. |

Hi,
I think my interests are similar to yours: I like reasonings.
I really like to be aspie, would never change.
I think we need not to be weird among us, all that we need is to construact a tolerant society.
Welcome! |
