Yes, I definitely believe we each have a soul and a spirit. Evidence of this would be why we ask ourselves, and each other, the big questions, like: Where did we come from; Where are we going in the end; and Why? -- What is it all about?

I'll go with yes. Simply as the only
way to defend my irrational belief
in free will. Not sure that there's
anything OUTSIDE of the soul though.

SOUL

1. The animating and vital principle in humans, credited with the faculties of thought, action, and emotion and often conceived as an immaterial entity.

2. The spiritual nature of humans, regarded as immortal, separable from the body at death, and susceptible to happiness or misery in a future state.

3. The disembodied spirit of a dead human.

SPIRIT

1

a. The vital principle or animating force within living beings.
b. Incorporeal consciousness.

2 The soul, considered as departing from the body of a person at death.

3 Spirit The Holy Spirit.

4 A supernatural being, as:

a. An angel or a demon.
b. A being inhabiting or embodying a particular place, object, or natural phenomenon.
c. A fairy or sprite.

5

a. The part of a human associated with the mind, will, and feelings: Though unable to join us today, they are with us in spirit.

b. The essential nature of a person or group.

I mean no disrespect by this, but the fact that we ask big questions like the ones you mentioned, does not serve as any kind of evidence that we have souls or spirits... but before I begin to assume more things, it's important to establish that we are both talking about the same thing. The word "soul" can have different meanings. I believe the definition the threadstarter had in mind was some essential part of all of us that lives forever; does not die when our bodies do; and when our bodies die the spirit lives on, perhaps going to some mythical place like heaven, hell, purgatory, etc. Soul can also mean personality or finesse or something special about a person. "Man, that guy has soul!" That's not the same as the ethereal, everlasting essence of a person.

That we ask big questions like the ones you mentioned, only reflects that we have high intelligent and giant brains compared to other animals. If dolphins or any other animal reaches our level of intelligence--and indeed when computers become as smart as we are--they will undoubted begin asking big questions. They're big questions, albeit when it comes down it, really obvious too.

It doesn't serve as any kind of evidence whatsoever, however, that we have souls, if by soul, we are talking about the same thing.

Fourthed.

Once in college I got some shocked looks when I commented on something I would really like to have and said "I'd sell my soul if I had one." I'm not sure whether the shock was over my willingness to let my soul go so cheaply, or that I claimed not to have one in the first place. (The comment about selling my sould was meant to be facetious.)
