Many regulars of the chat are becoming alarmingly concerned at the lack of ops, trolling and attacks on vulnerable users.
This needs all users urgent attention as the problem isn't being resolved quickly enough and chatters are being driven away 
My suggestions are as follows:
1. More regular ops on a strict rota covering all time zones.
2. Permanent ops to op trusted regular members if they are leaving thier duty for whatever reason.
3. A regular channel users nomination and vote for new ops.

Hello folks, most of you probably don't know me as I haven't posted on the forums yet.
I've been hanging around on the IRC channel for a little while though, so I hope my opinion counts
Last week we've had several major spam attacks on the channel. The way we dealt with this is by temporarily giving people ops status.
The attacks have shown us that the channels is somewhat vulnerable to attacks like these, especially if there's not an op on at the time to start taking measures.
I fully agree with all of babybear's points and I hope you vote yes |

man, I knew things weren't going fantastic back when I was on there a lot, but I didn't expect it to get this bad. Hope it gets cleared up.

well after a little chat in chat....
the idea of trial op-ing people came up..
let someone be an op for a month or so, and then review/vote on their status.
because if all the wrangling over who is suitable carries on, we will still be without the level of op coverage we would like.
I patent it as OP-Idol

Been ok, rough final semester at college over, made more difficult by the incident in April, but life goes on. Been busy job-hunting, and frequently distracted by far less important things, not sure why I haven't been in the channel for so long. Might try to get back in the habit of loading up a terminal with irssi. May not be for a bit, hoping I can find a job (and thus an apartment) so I can set up a computer room with multiple monitors. Makes the whole internetting bit easier.  |

I used to be a regular member here at the WP but there has been many problems even been in chat too. Chat maybe unregulated or does do not have a moderator on duty when needed. For a site that more family oriented is for all that can be very bad in the end.

What does OPs mean? I'm not familiar with that jargon. I've tried to get into the chat several times over the last 6 months but it will not connect.

WP chat is very well used by a large number of regular chatters.
The numbers using it are approx. 45 and 55 at any given time.
When the chat is op'd (channel op - like moderator on here) it's fun, friendly and informative.
It is a family chat but there are aux. channels set up around it for different kinds of discussions.
Although you can access it via this site, the best way is to use a separate IRC client and then connet to #wrongplanet which is on freenode
