I am running an old compaq 5020
specs

Windows XP pro (runs resonable)!! no eye candy (slows down once anti-virus is running)
I tried puppy linux on it with sea monkey browser works
but it is way too slow i can't take it!
1 minute just to open browser! (After that it is barley usable)
page scrolling very very choppy
if there is flash on the page it practacly halts!
there must be another linux distro that is faster than this (especially with firefox) thanks
I don't want to waste the pc just yet

Free BSD or Red Hat are good but it's the GUI that soaks up the resources both KDE and Gnome like a lot of cycles but i have had Gnome on systems of that sort of spec. _________________ Wisdom must be gathered, it cannot be given.

I was running Debian on my 266MHz 96MiByte Compaq Armada 4220T, with KDE. A tad slow. I've replaced it with Slackware, which seems a little livelier. I'm probably going to dual boot with DamnSmallLinux, to get a somewhat more responsive system going. I'm not sure what browser I'll go with - I'd like to stick to Seamonkey, but I may experiment to see if any of the leaner browsers are more tolerable. _________________ Phases of a project: (1) Exultation. Seamonkey is slow, but it's still the fastest Mozilla-based browser I know (Firefox being the slowest). But the fastest browser of all is still Opera. You may want to download an older version, though (7.54 or 8.xx) because the latest one would probably hang up sometimes on your PC (it does on my 800 MHz Pentium III).
About distributions, there's DeLi Linux, that runs in very old PCs (even 486) with X windows and every program you may need (browsers, office, etc). But it's very lightweight (<300 MB) and thus it doesn't include many packages: be ready to spend a lot of your time downloading new ones.
A Celeron can take more than that, though, don't underestimate it. My 566 MHz Celeron (with 128 MB RAM) was running KateOS III just fine (albeit slow) a few months ago. It could even run Ubuntu. But I don't recommend either of them for yours.
According to what I've read, Vector Linux could run fine on yours, but I've never tried it so I don't know how fast it is. Vector linux has two versions: the SOHO for modern PCs, and the regular one designed for lower-end PCs (it even works on my Pentium 133). So you could try that one. |

What you do is disable your antivirus if you only plan to go on trusted, virus-free web sites. |

Why would he/she even need an antivirus when using Linux? |

Don`t waste it. Not trying to go the Microsoft path but get something like windows 98SE
and MS-DOS 6.2. You can turn it to a DOS machine to play older games like Wolfenstien
,Sim City, and Commander Keen. |

A Linux that uses the XFCE or IceWM desktop environments will run fast even on older machines. Xubuntu (the XFCE version of Ubuntu) is a recommendation for starters. _________________ We all have our reasons for living. What's your excuse? |
