You know these business-sized cards they sell at those autism websites? Most of them say things like:

"This child has autism, a pervasive developmental disorder that affects motor coordination, language skills and social comprehension. He/she may behave unpredictable because he/she has difficulty understanding social situations. This is not his/her fault or his parents' fault, it is just the way he/she was born. Please be patient and understanding."

They're meant for parents who don't want to lose time giving explanations about their sons' behaviour.

I have seen very few for adults, and I need to make one for me. Yesterday was a very social and sensory-intensive day for me, and I ended up melting down. At the end of the day I had to talk to the teachers' secretary to ask for a document, but I realized I couldn't talk properly. I stuttered, used the wrong terms, repeated myself and couldn't pronounce some simple words. She seemed impatient and tried to guess what I wanted, but her voice sounded really loud, like it was coming from a megaphone. It sounded so painful that I ended up telling her "please shut up", and she obviously felt offended.

And I don't even have classical autism, just AS! Very Happy If I had such a card, I could have given her a better explanation without offending her.

So, what needs to be written in a "I'm autistic" card meant to be used in emergencies like this one?

Or, "I'm autistic, leave me the @%#$ alone". Very Happy

or, "This guy has Asperger's Syndrome, which basically means you should not argue with him on matters that interest him. He is right. Accept this and kill yourself."

Well.........ummm..........hmmm........I had a thought.........

I losted me thought!

I think something like a small business card would work.

"This person has Aspergers, and is under stress, please leave a message at the sound of the *bleep*."

(the "Bleep" being for any expletives.) Smile

Lame sense of humour, I know.

I'll shut up now.

I have thought of drawing a mini-comic to explain how I am....I could especially give it to the rare people who I like and want to socialise with so that perhaps I won't scare them off right away....naaah....that is pretty far-fetched....especially for someone who is not even diagnosed. Confused

I carry this, typed on a slip of paper, but I haven't given it to anybody yet (I don't know if it's a good idea)

====
Please excuse me.
I have a neurological problem.
Sometimes I can't speak.
I don't need help right now.
Thank you.
====

Suggestions, please?

Hell yeah!!! Laughing

On a more serious note, these cards do exist for adults. The one I know of has the following on it:

Quote:
Before addressing a person with autism
People with autism mostly speak clearly and correctly, and look very normal. The problem is that they process information differently. Therefore they sometimes cannot understand or interpret the full meaning of what is said or happens. Their apparently independent personality sometimes hides fear, insecurity, and social incapacity.

Therefore:
• Do not unnecessarily touch a person with autism.
• First explain what you are going to do, and ascertain whether your words have been understood well before proceeding to action.
• Ask simple and straight questions.
• Avoid irony or sarcasm, and do not use transferred meanings or comparisons.
• Allow a person with autism some extra time to absorb your information, or to proceed to action.
• Be aware that the person with autism does not intent to be impolite by not looking at you.

Important to know about this person with autism:
• may behave inadequate or strange.
• may seem inattentive, or not respond at all.
• avoids eye contact in case of stress, or when under pressure.
• may over-react
• may seem tactless.
• may seem cocky, stubborn or cross.
• may be extremely docile.
• mostly dislikes physical contact.
• finds body language hard to understand.
• takes proverbs and metaphors literal.
• may use formal, oldish or stately language.
• prefers fixed habits and rules.
• has a number of specific interests.
• often is unable to empathize.

Important information for police, care providers, and inspectors
A person with autism is vulnerable, whether they are a victim, a witness, or a suspect. Impaired communication, interaction, and imagination capabilities may cause them to get into trouble, or frighten them when their behavior is not understood. Consult an expert to ensure the person with autism receives adequate help. Autism, including the Asperger and PDD-NOS disorders, is classified as a behavioral disorder in the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD10). If you think your client/witness/detainee has autism, please have a psychiatric report be made up for the legal procedure.

What kind of negative events could happen because of one of these cards?
