Sounds like it could be dyspraxia. A lot of people with AS also have dyspraxia.

Like I said before, a lot of people who have AS also are dyspraxic.
(although it is also possible to be dyspraxic without having AS) |

I have always had problems with this and in my early school years I had to go to the learning center for help. I also had a leather brace type thing I had to wear on my hand or I'd break the pencil with too much pressure. _________________ "Strange is your language and I have no decoder Why don't make your intentions clear..." | I had to teach myself to hold a pen or pencil like "everyone else". I did it only because the other kids in school would pick on me about how I held my pencil. My handwriting didn't really improve but I can hold a pencil "properly" now. |

| I write with my right hand, but I hold the pen/pencil like a lefty would. Hand curled, wrist bent 45 - 60 degrees and the top of the pen pointing away from me. |

That's how I hold one too. I always smeared the pen-writing in school by brushing my hand over it as I wrote. My mother and my teachers battled with me for YEARS to hold it correctly. It never took. I can't write on a chalkboard without holding the side of my hand to the board- I have a hard time painting too- I can't have the side of my hand not be in contact with the paper. |

I used to hold a spoon and fork the wrong way... perhaps pencils too can't remember. I would hold them in a clenched fist, I would get yelled at for doing it the wrong way. I didn't see the reason everyone was making a fuss... I just kept on doing it my own way... I stopped eventually.
I've always had clumsy was of using tools and such... It was expected that I would drop a cup or whatever I was using. _________________ I hate so much about the things that you choose to be.

| I have atrocious handwriting and get bad writer's cramp from trying to compensate by holding the pen or pencil too hard. I've found that using certain types of pens, pencils and paper which give more "traction" sometimes help my writing. Especially the pens with a special grip for people with arthritis (which I have). I was diagnosed with motor control problems, so I don't type well either. I have to go slowly. I really recommend the fat pens with a padded grip. |

All through school I would twirl my pen/pencil in my hand. I wasn't very good at it though, so I would always accidentally drop it then have to pick it up, I would do this over and over and over. |

That's why I like using a pencil... the resistance helps me write. My pen handwriting is all over the place and crazy...
I also like pencil's with a large padding... it makes it much more comfortable to write. Oh a huge eraser is a plus... I'm a Mistakes Machine.
I like this one... it's expensive though... and I have a tendency to lose my pencils...

My writing is also quite bad thanks to my style of holding writing utensils. My teachers and teachers aides in elementary school struggled to make me hold my pencil proper, but I always resisted and held it my own way. Proper just wasn't comfortable. >_< They gave up, so I've written like that my whole life. If it really is an Aspie trait, then it's the earliest thing I can think of in my life. |
