Hey everyone,

I am a Christian Activist with Asperger's Syndrome. These two things have shown to be quite a mix over the years. People are always amazed at how I can tell someone that I think they are going to hell, and then give them a hug and tell them I love them at the same time. I do this because I am not bound so much by a "comfort zone" and "social correctness" like a lot of NT's are, but I find that many have respected me in that I tell them what I am thinking but also show love to them. Anyways, I will say though that having Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior has helped me as I live with Asperger's Syndrome. It is a comfort that even when no one else understands me, Jesus always does. There have been so many times that I lost things or did inappropriate things in public, but when I prayed to God about it I always felt better and my confidence was refreshed. I just was curious who else here was an evangelical, Bible-believing Christian with Asperger's Syndrome.

No but I have lived in College Station and Byran TX though. Smile Obsession in religion and politics is the path of misery for an aspie I have been there and am so much happier now I'm an atheist with little concern for politics.

Then you know what I mean about politics. I am trying to get off of it. Do you still live in the B/CS area?

TheMachine1,

What did you consider yourself before you were an atheist?

Why do you say this?
Seems like perfectly
reasonable subjects
to focus on, as long
as you don't believe
what is being stated.

Well Calandale,

I would say obsession with politics is especially what me and TheMachine1 have reaped misery from. If an aspie is obsessed in trains, birds, or planes, other people ONLY get bored of them talk about it. But if it is politics, people could get BORED, TICKED OFF, or BOTH. That does present a challenge for an Aspie obsessed with politics because the thing he wants to talk about all the time he knows will often start fights and arguments among people that may or may not damage the Aspie's relationships. Some of us have learned the hard way on that.

But religion I think ticks people off less in general, but that is not saying much.

Ah. I haven't learned it yet then.
Most of my friends never had a
problem with lively discussions.
We might not agree on issues,
but could certainly discuss them
without disliking one another.

On the other hand, I've noticed
that the types of people whom I
probably respect too little, DO
get angry with one another over
such things.

Not passionate, just angry and
unreasonable. I have found little
or nothing in common with these
types though, and try and avoid
them. Sadly, they do comprise
the majority.

Ragtime,

Thanks for the Welcome

Calandale,

Who can possibly understand why so many NTs don't give much thought to issues that they KNOW directly affect them and that they often KNOW are important?

I don't think that this is
some sort of NT/AS divide.
I may be wrong, but I've certainly
seen quite a few here and at other
AS sites who just don't seem to put
thought into these things.

Yeah but one can have ample misery from politics without even talking to others about it. All in ones own head.

Its a bad obsession because it has massive potential for real and infinite perceptions of failure on a daily basis. The thing you obsess about the most will be giving you a large doses of daily unhappiness.

I'm basing it on my own life experience and reading about other members on this site. Some of the most depressed miserable people on this site are obsessed with politics or single issues (animal rights, etc). I see religion obsessed aspies here in endless heated debates and I am only assuming it can promote the same internal discontent but I maybe over estimating that risk. Especially since religion provides alot of comfort to people that politics really never could.

Oh I've pointed this out to a number of members before but telling someone to drop their obsession is an exercise in futility. Smile

Strangely I don't get upset by politics that much. I find it to be more along the lines of a thing to chat about. Then again I am not an idealist.

TheMachine1, are you saying that aspies are less able to live up to NT values and beliefs? I'd agree that politics and religion are less relevant to us than they are for many, tho thinking's always been my thing.

But, when I tell myself 'nothing matters', I feel I have less to live for, however true it may (or may not) be. I don't have to go to the other extreme (aka "all autistics deserve to burn forever in hell" or whatever) either_
