I just got my new Sony ambient noise-reducing headphones @ $79CAD. Not perfect but not bad. Definitely better than nothing. If I win the lottery I'll get top of the line but for now, this is very good. I can't hear the lower register of the air-conditioner's hum, and only about half of the rest (from 6' away). I can't hear the fridge at all.
I've had them on for an hour, connected to nothing. Note: if you buy, don't forget batteries. Mine uses one AAA battery. The thing is, I felt a little lightheaded at first. Now my muscles are relaxed and I'm breathing more deeply, I'm very relaxed. So maybe the 'ambient noise' was keeping me tense?
As usual, without WP I wouldn't even have known what to buy. _________________ Claradoon

| Where can I find these and where can I find a more expensive version that could possibly work better. Noise (especially hums of flourescent lights air conditions and frigidares) drives me crazy all day long.. |

Bose.....supposedly make top of the line speakers and headphones.I cant afford them but, maybe someday.....?I tried wearing ear plugs and cheap headphones to drowned out the horrible "muzak" and dog barking at work...not effective but helps a little.
I cant stand the feel of the head phones on my head though(cant wear hats either),so it is deciding which sensory issue is worse. _________________ Just because one plane is flying out of formation, doesnt mean the formation is on course....R.D.Lang

URGENT NOTE TO ALL BOARD MEMBERS
Please do not wear noise reducing headphones whilst riding a bike. They're great for reducing the noise of the city but it also means you can't hear car horns or pedestrians shouting "look out!!".
Guess how I know this

Yeah not good for work either if you deal with a lot of people.
Not being able to hear them means you'd spend most of your time not wearing them and making people angry for "ignoring them".
Having a set that filtered out all but the human vocal range would be nice.. thats still a pretty wide frequency range though.. perhaps combined with voice recognition to pass on words but filter out sounds in the same frequency? _________________ Animals at least are honest. I can still hear people speaking, if they're near me. I'm still so relaxed, I think I'll never take these off. Ambient - maybe it means surrounding noise? I can hear a car honk, or somebody yell, or a dog bark. I don't get the constant hum-thrum-thrum of the world. It seems to cut the noise level about in half. Like I said, not perfect, but waaaay better than nothing. Wish I'd done this a long time ago.
Years ago, I walked out on a dyke into the Bay of Fundy - I was about 2 miles out, and I could still hear the sound of traffic on Main Street in Wolfville, a town about a mile long, cars spaced about 5 minutes apart. I thought, where on earth would I hear silence? Maybe the Bose headphones do that completely. In the meantime, I'm glad for the relief from the others. _________________ Claradoon

No, they do not. Or at least, a good pair dosen't. My Sony Earbuds can block out traffic even with no sound playing at all... |

Anywhere you buy music equipment, just like they were ordinary headphones for music. _________________ Claradoon

| Tried these noise reducing headphones out at a store and found that they reduce but do not eliminate noise. They are pricey and the ones that are any good tend to be bulky and difficult to carry around. The headphones are typically designed so that you will still hear the higher frequencies like another person talking or an object being dropped on the table. Since these are exactly the sounds that bother me the most when I experience auditory sensitivity, the practical value of these headphones diminish considerably. They do work though and if you are desperate to reduce the amount of sound you hear, it can be a good investment. |
