There's several conflicting theories on there. Take your pick.

It means Gwen Stefani is a sellout whose music was much more tolerable when she was with No Doubt Wink

Whenever it's on the radio, my brother and I just sit there laughing hesterically. Her meaning is complete stupidity.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Gwen Stefani a lot, but I understand why people think that song makes no sense.

"Love, Angel, Music, Baby" sounds like a very good album. "What You Waiting For" is good. "Rich Girl" is actually a cover, and "Hollaback Girl," well, it was sung by a talented person all the way around, so how can I not like it? "Hollaback Girl" is like "The Gong Show" or "Blue Collar TV" in terms of music. It's so bad that people like it. It's like a guilty pleasure.

Personally, I think Gwen Stefani is doing well as a solo artist.

I like "I know we're cool" quite a bit just on the principle that it's so unexpected. You think, watching the video, that there'd be tentsion, but she's hanging out with her ex and his girlfriend and nothing goes wrong! The music video is more surprising then the Red Sox winning the world series last year! ((I'm a Stephen King fan and a new englander, even as much apathy as I have toward sports that was a shocker.))

Very observant, Serissa, I never noticed that. However, what your point is, I don't know.

I love this song. However, I don't understand why she has to say s--- in every sentence. I like it better than the Pussycat Dolls song "Don't Cha", which has to have the dumbest chorus I ever heard:

Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me
Don't cha wish your girlfriend was free like me
Don't cha wish your girlfriend was fun like me
Don't cha wish your girlfriend was wrong like me
Don't cha Don't cha.

someone told me it means that she won't get into arguments with people who slag her off in the press, ie she won't "holler back" to their arguements.

My point is to say I'm not one of the people who despises her as a solo artist. Wink

Right on, Serissa! I am with you all the way! I like Gwen, too. She isn't one of those people who changed drastically when she got older, like the lead singer of the group who originally sang, "I'll Be There." I'm sure you know who that is.

Thanks for the links to the supposed meanings of Hollaback Girl. It was enlightening!! Smile

I don't think Gwen has sold out. I think that she's simply working with some different people and that can lead to better creativity when she returns to No Doubt. I think she will. She worked on Love, Angel, Music, Baby with her one of her co-writers in No Doubt. I have no pun intended doubt she'll be back with No Doubt or perhaps her second solo disc will contain more of Gwen's Rock sensibilities. I look forward to them!!

What you waiting for is my favorite off the solo album. With No Doubt, There are too many to list here!!!
Very Happy

Sometimes I like songs that make no sense, and I'll admit this one is catchy, but I do think it's way beneath Gwen. I wouldn't call her a sellout, though - this is just a side project she did for fun, and besides I generally hate that term. Maybe now that Gwen has gotten her girly/hip-hop/techno/80s side out, she can go back to rocking with No Doubt.
