How do people with AS and Autism get along fine over the internet with out getting picked on? I know you will say that it's because most of us on this site have Asperger's, but I still never get picked on when I'm on a regular messageboard, other than a similar community. _________________ |

I've thought about this myself at great length. My theory is that certain aspects of your condition that would be noticed in a face-to-face situation go unnoticed over the Internet.
Hope this helps... _________________ We are one, we are strong... the more you hold us down, the more we press on - Creed, "What If"

Same as I thought, but I wish it wasn't so bad face-to-face... _________________ |

| i thought about this. my theory is that there is no face to face interaction, and as such people arent able to use tones of voice, body movement, etc. they have to say exactly what they mean. it makes it easier that way. |

On a video game forum I went to (the one where I got my avatar pics from- the forum isn't there anymore) there was a member known as The Snake who got banned for spamming the forums. No one liked him, he said a lot of stupid stuff, and when he got banned he tried to get revenge on everyone on the forums (including me), such as hacking and sending the members threatening spam messages via AIM. I really feel sorry for him, but he hates me now because of one stupid thing he found out I said in a chat room, and it was a year after... he has to learn that people make mistakes and he can't dwell on it.
I think his problem is that he's tried to hard to be like the jocks, making homophobic comments and making pathetic attempts to be cool... I learnt a long time ago that fitting in with the cool people isn't worth it. It's a shame, as he was a lot like me in a lot of ways. |

Hahahah.
I am the #1 target for trolls on every message board I have ever been registered at. This site is no exception - I've got teelaclarke on my back (one example).
I'm sorry but I don't think having AS has anything to do with how people are treated over the internet, hell, I get on with more people in real life. |

I get targeted a lot on the forums provided by my university, but that's only because of some things that I've said like "looks don't matter, it's what's inside that counts" and "not all guys are b*****ds"... just people who don't agree with my point of view - and yet those same people accuse me of doing the same thing... Pot calling the kettle black is what it is. _________________ We are one, we are strong... the more you hold us down, the more we press on - Creed, "What If"

Well at least LGB/CoolBlues isn't. Heh.
I've not had too many problems like that and I do agree with others that mainly it's that there is lack of a need for eye contact, body gestures, etc. that helps make things a little bit easier although lack of things like that can also produce misunderstandings too which has often happened as well on here on the forum and other places on the net even for Aspies. |

I'm not saying this is the case for all aspies/autistics, but it's a lot easier for me to write (or type) than talk face-to-face with someone. I can usually say what I want without people yelling in my face. Most of the people I know online (especially here, as well as a few friends in other places) are more open-minded, or at least respectful.
It's also very difficult to talk because if you say something wrong, you've already said it. You don't have to think while you're trying to speak as much on the computer. There is an opportunity to think and format your thoughts before you "say" them when online. Also, there isn't the issue of eye contact or facial expressions when writing. _________________ Itaque incipet.

| I wondered about that as well and came to the conclusion that it was because I don't have to work voice voice tones and looking at people. I don't have to worry about ages either; normally I would be intimidated by anyone my age or older, but online I just don't care: I can be who I want to be. |
