I think many mainstream NTs have a difficult time wrapping their minds around the concepts that Aspies are Autistic and are not some how a mentally retarded child sitting in a corner rocking bad and forth.
I have had plenty of people try to tell me that I am not Autistic, or that I could not be Autistic because of their understanding and definition of Autism.
Now, trying to explain Aspergers seems like a monumental task, and frankly, a lot of simple minded people aren't even capable of understanding what it is.
Thus, if you could rename Asperger's to something that would make sense to many people, and take less time for others to understand, what would you call it?
I think Autism Light, or maybe Gifted Autism, or maybe Non-"Neurotypicaloidious" <<---.
Can non Neurotypicalidious be a word that makes sense to the reader?
What is your word(s) that would be more pronounceable and descriptive to others that know nothing about Austism and Aspergers?

I would just bring it up in conversation by calling it what many people do... "A high-functioning form of Autism."

Well, I don't know about you guys, but considering that Dr. Asperger himself called it "autistic psychopathy", then "Asperger Syndrome" doesn't seem too bad 
Maybe "Asperger Autism" makes it more clear in the way you're trying to make it?
I don't really know since I don't really tell other people about it...so I never have to explain what it is... |

Interesting that you do not tell people about it. Why is that? Don't you find it hard to get by in life with nobody knowing. Many people might think you are really weird, or maybe a jerk, insensative, or something. I don't know, I just don't think I could get through life without some people knowing. I probably would be fired from my job if I didn't let at least my boss know.

I encounter many people that don't even know what that means. And Autism seems like such an intense word from so many people that think of Rainman when they hear of Autism.

Yes, the 'words' seem to require definition/clarification by those unfamiliar (that is, most everyone). Have any of you heard Aspergers pronounced differently? By this I mean, some I know (even in medical profession) pronounce it the Austrian way: aus-ber-jerz - with a soft 'j' and 'z' sound. Very avant garde, yes?
I DEFININTELY want, and deserve, and better name for meltdown. In fact, I demand it. Meltdown, the word, sounds like a sandwich, like a tunamelt. Or a pattymelt. Meltdown sounds like when the Wicked Witch gets doused with water. Often NTs will speak of a 'meltdown' like a bad temper tantrum or just really stressed - which has NOTHING to do with a true autistic meltdown. So, when I say, 'meltdown' any given NT has no clue what that means! Much too colloquial (sp?). I want a clinical name for this autistic phenomena! I feel silly saying, "I had a meltdown." Let's find something.......1) with true meaning 2) classier.
I'm feeling melty now......

I think a lot of people with Aspergers are gifted. Einstien, Newton, Ford, Gates, AG Bell, Gore, and a host of others. They certainly do not fit the typical sense of the term Autism.
Autism + "Normal Cognitive Pattern" makes NO SENSE at all because the definition of Autism means you are do not have a Normal Cognitive Pattern. It is like saying it Dark + Light, or Up + Down.

Good Point. I would like a meltdown with that fries and shake. Lets all go get a meltdown and side salad.
I think a meltdown is simple just someone becoming overwhelmed by their environment. Their brain cannot process all the information because of TMI.
