Professor Tolkien intended it to be all one book (six parts, plus the appendices), so kudos to you for thinking along the same lines as him.

I have asperger's for heaven's sake. Asking me to choose just five movies is like asking someone to eat one potato chip. I can't do it!!!! So instead I will list my 5 favorite directors/producers, as that is a far easier task and less likely to cause terminal brain freeze.
