I was just thinking, as I opened my new box of lovely grey organic rock salt (ohhhhhhh yes) and prepared my dinner - do any of you find you really crave salt?
I always have done, especially when I was younger. It's the one thing that's not disappeared as I've got older or as I've changed to a totally healthy diet. I always assumed it must mean I'm lacking it, but I easily get enough through my diet anyway (despite not eating any processed foods).
Which then led me to thinking, perhaps it's something to do with the neurology of autism and Asperger's??

I have craved salt my entire life. At present, I add salt to almost everything I eat, and still they have to monitor my sodium levels. I can't even think about taking a diuretic, or I risk muscle cramps and cardiac arrythmia. _________________ I tried to get in touch with my feminine side.... but it got a restraining order..... |

Yummmmmm.....salt....
I've been constantly accused of not eating anything not coated in white. Prolly too. Could be. Hmmm....son is diagnosed and craves salt as well. Always thought it was just our weirdity. I find that if I'm craving chocolate which I can't eat much of because of migraines, that sometimes eating something salty will take that craving away. _________________ "All those things that you taught me to fear

Yes! Big time.
I have low blood pressure, and have actually been told by two different doctors that I *should* eat lots of salt. (Yay!) |

| Yes, when I was younger (as in a child and then teenager) I used to pour salt into the palm of my hand and then lick it up like candy. My daughter also craves salt - she's an adult now, but uses ketchup as a vehicle to get salt to stick to her french fries. She's been told to drink caffeine and to have a lot of salt every day as she has autonomic nervous system problems related to maintaining blood pressure. (I used to faint a lot as a teen, but outgrew that. I'm hoping she does as well.) |

Same here. I put salt on apples, carrots, mashed potatos, etc. I put Pringle's potato chips on cheeseburgers. Yum! I always salted take-out food.
I try to watch my salt intake since I'm over 50 but I like salted popcorn sometimes. I find that Mrs. Dash satisfies my craving for spicy flavors. _________________ To eliminate poverty, you have to eliminate at least three things: time, the bell curve and the Pauli Exclusion Principle. Have fun. |

| I love salt too. And also have low pressure--not as low as it used to be (the bottom number could drop as low as 45 which was supposed to be a problem, but it never affected me). Cliff bars make a bar called mojo--very salty.... |

| I was never much of a salt person until I discovered tamari. Now I put tamari on all kinds of things. |

OMG!!!
Is this an aspie thing as well?!
I'm a total salt-hound. As a kid I used to eat bouillon cubes like sweeties, and now I slather rock salt or shoyu on everything (you know marmalade sarnies taste even better with a sprinkling of salt?)
I have lovely low blood pressure - is this why my body tells me to fill up on salt?
As a side note, I find myself getting really ticked at all the reduced salt products now. I find I'm constantly adding more.
Wonder what the bio-chemists have to say about a possible AS-salthound link? Any research anywhere? |

Salt Freak here too - lots of salt - different kinds of salt.
Since I own a restaurant, when I cook I have to watch the salt levels in the food for the customers and then when I eat it I add more salt for me. _________________ If you have one option you have an obsession.

OK, I confess. YES! I always find that I must sprinkle salt on everything. I use Sea salt, though. I like eating dried kelp, which has a nice, salty flavor. Also nacho chips, tortilla chips, and potato chips. _________________ "However gradual it looks from here, look if you like, but you will have to leap." |

| I use a lot of salt in the foods I eat, especially for soups and vegetable dishes. At times, I add salt without even tasting the food. Luckily, I'm in my 20's, and never had high blood pressure problems. So I'm planning to stick with my salt habit, until a doctor tells me otherwise. |

I like salt, but not that much. I'll admit, though, to the sometimes pouring salt in my hand and licking it thing
But I don't usually add salt to my food at the table, unless it desperately needs it.
What's your guys position on "lite salt"? (That is salt of potassium chloride instead of sodium?) |

Good grief, YES!!! I'm always being told off for eating too much salt, and for adding it to food without tasting it first. I'm particularly bad with take out curries (a nice Chicken Madras with extra salt stirred in - yum!), and soups, but I add extra salt to just about everything savoury.
This is a really interesting thread - I wonder if there is a connection?? |
