In a perfect world my computer's OS would not be vulnerable to viruses.
but Sophos is about the best I have found in terms of finding and removing viruses without hoging so much of my machines recorces to make it too slow.
(of course it is expensive). _________________ Wisdom must be gathered, it cannot be given.

Avast is my favourite at the moment.
It can scan email,p2p traffic, files and various other things and best of all you can get a home license for it for free |

| None! Antivirus programs take my patience off. I prefer just to use limited accounts, good NTFS permissions and a bit of care with unknown softwares. And Linux/BSD at other times. |

I like Kaspersky.
On the other hand, Comodo's antivirus beta is looking pretty good - I'd like to see how that turns out. _________________ "Maybe the ones who have it easy are missing part of the adventure."

On Windows, I use CA AntiVirus, because I can get it for free from RoadRunner. If not for that, I would probably use AVG, because it's a free, full-featured program. If I was going to pay, though, I would probably buy the ZoneAlarm suite, as they have (IMO) the best firewall.
On the Mac, I use nothing. Why bother? |

I use Avast, and the best thing about it is that it's free and works great. _________________ iSheep deserve to be put out to iPasture. |

| I use Symantec because altough its not free it is very useful and not very memory demanding opposed to Norton and other proprietory antivirus programs and doesn`t glitch too often. When i have an older machine below 1.4Ghz i will sometimes use AVG Depanding on OS and memory.[If i have 256MB+ and Win 2000/XP i`ll use Symantec. If Win98 or Linux or memory below 256Mb is the case i`ll use AVG.] |

Symantec is Norton! and it has the worse memory issues of any antivirus _________________ Visit me @ Neural Deviant

Agreed - it used so much memory that I ditched it even though I'd paid a lot to renew my membership (came with the computer). It wasn't worth it. It uses about ten times as much memory as any product I've had since.
Edit: For information's sake, I'm running a fairly up-to-date computer (2.2GHz dual core, 1GB RAM, 250GB HD, etc.). Also, I may be confused, but I'm pretty sure Norton is just a Symantec product... as far as I know, they aren't different things, and Symantec is not a subdivision of Norton. If I'm verifiably wrong, could someone show me/link me to what's correct? _________________ "Maybe the ones who have it easy are missing part of the adventure."

Symantec is the Cadilliac Of Norton. If you run it on a modern machine you shouldn`t have an issue. I`ve had more issues with the Free programs than Symantec. When i had AVG i couldn`t even open Facebook sometimes due to the fact that some viruses will still get on the computer and make it were i couldn`t go on certain sites w/o Windows closing the browser.
I also use Windows Defender, Windows and Outpost Firewall 08, Spybot S&D and never get a slowdown issue on a 3Ghz P4 w/ 1Gb Memory that i use. In most cases all programs and Windows XP only eat up 1/20th of my memory. I also play i lot of Games and use a lot of Video-Editing Programs on computers like that and never get an issue and its still very fast. It also helps to use CCleaner once a day and browse with Firefox.
Never had any issues with Symantec at all. Not the most memory conserving program but it gets the job done well. Symantec still is not the worst when it comes to Memory Usage. McAffe and Norton are still in the lead. Overall Symantec is a very reliable Program and i should know since i have my own computer repair/ used computer buisness and know how to program in C++, VBS, and JavaScript. |

I haven't used Symantec in 6 years, they should have improved by now, when I was using Symantec antivirus I was always getting viruses, some that couldn't be removed. I was given a copy of Kaspersky antivirus and I liked it right away, it solved alot of issues I was having while reinstalling games, had a virus included on the cd, while try to install and kaspersky found it, something norton failed at. I have been using Avast now for almost 2 years _________________ Visit me @ Neural Deviant
