My GP's response when I mentioned the possibility of having AS:

"As you have a job and don't have any big problems in life, I don't think there's much point looking into it."

I'm sorry, I must have imagined all those years of feeling isolated and depressed, being socially inept and bullied throughout school as a result, having meltdowns, needing routines to feel comfortable in life, having obsessive interests, being uncoordinated, being hypersensitive to cold surfaces etc. I also didn't realise that the DSM-IV criteria had been changed to

1) Unemployable
2) Has problems in life

Anyone else had similar/worse?

I've had a similar experience... A couple weeks ago I saw a phychiatrist. After spending an hour telling him about all my symptoms he tells me that he thinks I have "social phobia" and tried putting me on pills for that... He didn't even know what a "stim" was (he told me that he THINKS he knew what I meant), didn't know what aspergers was, etc. (how is this idiot a phychologist?)

I left there feeling like I wasted my time... I had to wait for two months just hear that it sounds like I have "social phobia" and that I should get help for it. I told him that I wasn't content with his diagnosis and told him that I want to get help for aspergers or asperger's-like symptoms. Him and the health-care professional he was sitting beside told me that "I shouldn't waste my time with problems I don't have, and that I should see them again and get "homework" from them for my anxiety until I overcome my anxiety.

Sorry but no f*cking thank you!

BTW I have hated MOST psychologists, psychiatrists, health care workers and doctors for the past few years. I've had nothing but trouble with them. The best way IMO to get a proper diagnosis is to do a bunch of research yourself. A doctor is kind of like a sh*tty medical book, they know bits and pieces about certain things and lots of the bits are left out. If you do see a doctor try to find one who has worked with lots of aspies.

'Oh, why do you think you have autism?'

'That's hard to answer.'

'Give me an example of why you think you have autism.'

'Because of my entire life.'
---
'Do you hate your mother?'

'No.'

'Are you sure?'
----
'You must be able to use the phone. It's easy.'
----
'Do you feel depressed?'

'No.'

'Do you usually feel depressed?'

'Never.'

'You make a very depressed impression on me right now.'
----
'Do you want to die still?'

'No. I never wanted to die.'

'But you wanted to kill yourself, people only do that when they want to die.'

'I'm not like people. I forgot killing myself would leave me dead there for a moment.'

'Now, is that so? I don't believe that's true.'
----
'You're not autistic. You're almost an adult.'

In response to "I need to know how and why the items you're giving me will help, otherwise I won't be very good at taking/doing them. I need to do a significant amount of research myself" I got "well, these things are very complicated. There are a lot of things we don't understand about all of this" and no explanations whatsoever.

"I think it's time for you to become an adult" (at 39....)

"you can't have asperger, you're looking at my eyes"

"aspergers don't even go to school, they're institutionnalised, you are not that"

in psychiatric IC unit, after an attempt "You can't die only from Prozac overdose, you should have ****** too"
(I censured it cause, to the opposite of the stupid psy, i don't want to give infos about what's effective for suicide...)

pat666rick,
is probably a mental health pysch, one who usually only deals with pyschiatric and mental illnesses, and has not had any extra teaching and experience in ASD.

Sora,
it sounds like that doctor is the one that wants to die, they like mentioning dying a lot.
Am also wonder do professionals who say Autistics don't exist when get to adult hood,do they think all go to the moon on a space ship as some sort of ASD cult,or have a mass suicide pact when get to adult age?
Where exactly do they think go?

Are you asking me to summerize about 7 hours worth of sessions? Laughing

The most bullshit my shrink ever told me was "Well, you are obviously doing high-school quite well and you dont have major problems in your life, neither socially"..

Why thanks. No wonder i dont have no BIG problems socially when i stay at my room most of the day because i SUCK at social life. Thanks for making it obvious to me.

Also, it goes hand in hand with what you pointed out, just because you can make your way trough life, it doesnt mean you dont have problems. Evil or Very Mad

So was he a psychiatrist or a psychologist? (you used both terms) A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, and is mainly involved in writing prescriptions. For instance, I see a psychologist, and then I also have regular check-ups with a psychiatrist for medication. A psychiatrist is not the person to see for an autism diagnosis. I'm not surprised he tried to prescribe medication- that's what he does, and probably what he thought you had come for.

The "homework" probably referred to cognitive behavioral therapy, which has been shown to be extremely effective in treating anxiety, and which involves a lot of work outside of the clinic environment. Don't knock it until you've tried it- I've had a lot of success with it.

On Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (this is VERY OFFENSIVE):

You're lucky you're married and where you are in life, you know. Most PCOS women are very fat and end up having to marry a brown man, because brown men are more accepting of fat women. That's why you always see fat white women with brown men.

I reported him for that, but nothing happened to him. He still works there, and is still able to see patients and make sizist and racist remarks to them.

On OCD:

Can't you just stop thinking those thoughts? I mean, if they bother you, why do you keep thinking them?

Uh, I am obsessed with scary crap, and then I am compelled to continue to think about it. It's a disorder. Hence the "O", the "C", and the "D" part.

Oh man, I will edit to include more. I know there are many more.

To the moon... I should have asked her, that's brilliant. It would have made her shut up. I was too distraught to get under her skin though, I couldn't think of anything to say at that moment. She questioned all I said. 'Are you sure?' 'That's unlikely' 'Wasn't it more like this...?'

She didn't consider autism for a second, she just questioned me for horrific events of my past. It is truley unbelievable that this person had successfully diagnosed a child/teenager with AS or autism before me...

Same person, 90 minutes, head psychologist (or was it a psychiatrist?) of a clinic! I'm never going to set a foot in there again.
