Wishing a good day to all of you. I'm 18 years old, living in Hyderabad, India, and I've never been diagnosed as I stopped trusting all medical practitioners a few years back (except a certain homeopathic doctor), due to being continuously misdiagnosed for almost every disease. I diagnosed myself with AS almost a year ago, and I have most features of AS. I also have hallucinogen persisting perception disorder after consuming LSD twice, although it's now under control.
I enjoy reading encyclopedias, my main interests are history, politics, religion, linguistics, and anthropology. I like watching anime, wuxia, and k-dramas. I'm currently learning to speak French and Japanese. I am a (very) liberal Muslim.
I have very few friends, and my main problem is that I'm in love with my closest friend, who happens to be a former video jockey. Most people say that I have good looks (my father is a former Raymonds model) apart from having mediocre acne scars. However, I've had no confidence at all throughout my life, I had only one friend (I've lost contact with him) prior to meeting her (almost three years ago), and most people consider me to be rude, as I hardly interact with anyone in class. I can't reveal the "real" me outside home, only around my family, sans my father (parents are divorced). I'm afraid of revealing my feelings, as I don't wish to ruin the only good friendship I have in my life. I was wondering if any of you can help me out?
I've talked to a few people regarding AS, and I've always had negative responses, such as, some believe it's a disease, others think I'm a psycho, while others feel pitiful. Is this common in your country as well? Nobody in India is aware of any ASD, apart from psychology students, and AS was introduced in the syllabuses of most universities around a decade ago. My mother herself was a psychology student, and although she's aware of what autism is, never knew what AS is untill I explained it to her.
Also, regarding unusual body movements, such as flapping, twisting, of hands, and rocking body back and fourth. I happen to flap my hands whenever I start thinking, and my parents have interpreted this as "keyboard addiction". I know very well that it's no form of addiction, and I wish to ask if you all (who are replying) happen to posses any of these unusual body movements? Have you been able to control them? Most people stare at my hands in a weird manner when I walk to the gym, and this has begun to irritate me of late.
That's all I have to write in this post.
P.S. - Pardon me for my incoherent typing, it's almost 2:00 AM, and I slept only for 4 hours last night. |

Hi Khan_Sama welcome to the "right" Planet...
Like you I gave up on the medical profession, doctors etc.. years ago from fear on being wrongly diagnosed, I did in fact eventually diagnose myself last year. _________________ "Believe in your self, we are who we are - as it can feel like an endless task trying to be someone else!" This type of behavior or stereotypical motor habit is what we call "stimming", I tend to rock back and forth when I am thinking or
distressed in some way. _________________ Autie was I ere I saw Eitua |

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! ^^
As for being wrongly diagnosed, the system in India is screwed. We have certain classes called scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, who used to be the most backward and ill-treated people in the past, are given reservation in all fields in government schools, colleges, and even in government jobs (India has a mixed economy). They are given a reservation of 25% in government schools and colleges, and they make up 24% of the population. Muslims are also given reservation, in my state, Muslims make up almost 20% of the population in this state, and are given 5% reservation. Due to this reservation system, and most of them coming from illiterate backgrounds, there are four different types of syllabuses for school, one which is descended from the Cambridge syllabus in Eton (private), one which is controlled by the central government, one which is controlled by the state government, and one which is called National Open School (private). You can imagine how much these differences of syllabuses and reservations has impacted medical professions. Many many Indians aspire to be either doctors or engineers, with the result that there are too many medical "professionals". Of course, quite convenient for them, as half the population is illiterate, 70% is rural, and due to unhygienic conditions, keep falling sick, keep getting misdiagnosed, keep falling sick, in a never ending cycle.
Regarding stimming - is there any way to control it? I really can't explain to everyone I meet in the road that I'm an Aspie, plus, I don't speak the second major language spoken in my city, although I've lived here for almost nine years. I tried holding various thinks in my hands, such as a book or mobile, or carry a plastic bag, I always tend to tap it with my fingers. >_< |

Hi!
Welcome to Wrongplanet!
Your English is great, and yes, I know that India is a cross between England and Asia.
I hope you enjoy posting here! _________________ Jason Larsen

Thanks! ^^
Actually, I was raised in an anglophone family (around half of India's middle and upper class families are anglophone, as you know), that's why I speak fluently in English. In fact, I'm much better at speaking in English than my own native language, Urdu. |

Welcome Khan_Sama!
I lived in Delhi for two and a half years. The thing I miss most is the school I would attend. Good days. _________________ "How about a shave?"

@larsenjw92286: Bit worried today, couldn't study for my exam, although it's my favourite subject (political science), I don't like most of the topics being taught this year.
@SilverProteus: That's nice. I personally don't like Delhi though, there's something about Khadi Boli that annoys me...can't understand why. Nice pot though, and the weather's definitely much better than it is here, down south. |

I hear ya on the weather. I never had ACs in the summer (mom gets reactions when they're turned on) and having to put up with an extremely humid 40+ degree Celsius day under the fan is no fun.
I regret I've never been south though. I would've liked to have travelled more while living there, if only my father liked to travel. _________________ "How about a shave?"
