yahoo news wrote:

Having a husband creates an extra seven hours of housework each week for women, according to a new study. For men, tying the knot saves an hour of weekly chores.

"It's a well-known pattern," said lead researcher Frank Stafford, an economist at University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. "Men tend to work more outside the home, while women take on more of the household labor."

He points out individual differences among households exist. But in general, marriage means more housework for women and less for men. "And the situation gets worse for women when they have children," Stafford said.

Overall, times are a' changing in the American home. In 1976, women busied themselves with 26 weekly hours of sweeping-and-dusting work, compared with 17 hours in 2005. Men are pitching in more, more than doubling their housework hours from six in 1976 to 13 in 2005.

Stafford analyzed time-diaries and questionnaires from a nationally representative sample of men and women over a 10-year period between 1996 and 2005. The federally-funded study showed that, compared with the single life, marriage meant more housework for both men and women.

"Marriage is no longer a man's path to less housework," Stafford said.

Single women in their 20s and 30s did the least housework, about 12 weekly hours, while married women in their 60s and 70s did the most - about 21 hours a week.

Men showed a somewhat different pattern, with older men picking up the broom more often than younger men. Single guys worked the hardest around the house, trumping all age groups of married men.

Having kids boosts house chores even further. With more than three kids, for instance, wives took on more of the extra work, clocking about 28 hours a week compared with husbands' 10 hours.

Women should stop getting married. I hope I never will.

I want to stay single, as well.

well, as with all studies, there are exceptions. My daughter creates an extra 7 hours of work for my wife...and I tend to keep her work to a minimum...Wink

Two quotes from the late Katherine Hepburn on IMDb.com:

"I often wonder whether men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then."

On marriage: "It's bloody impractical. 'To love, honor, and obey.' If it weren't, you wouldn't have to sign a contract."

I agree. I never had a roommate because I can't imagine living with another person, and marriage is even worse--because you're expected to do all the work, there's no equality. I think marriage ruins relationships. Things were okay with my last bf till he started trying to pressure me to get married. He just couldn't get into his head that I am happy being independent, coming back to MY home every night, having the liberty to do things the way I like it, when I like it. I also think that there are very few men in the world who view women as human beings--women are viewed as sex objects, as someone to cook your meals and clean your clothes, as a beautiful trophy to show off to your friends, but definitely NOT as fellow humans. It's impossible to live happily with someone who doesn't accept the fact that you are a human being, with thoughts and feelings.

I know I never will. I'm a man and don't want to get married and so I won't. Anyway, the above poll or whatever doesn't quite add up. It sounds more like women create more work for themselves as the man only saves one hour while the woman adds seven. If women weren't so obsessive about cleaning, they wouldn't have so much work to do. Also, kids would create far more work than a man would. Thankfully I'll never have kids either.

Nonsense. Marriage does not make extra work for the woman as a rule. People just decide that together. In my relationship I am the one working out and my girlfriend is in home. On average I do at least as much work around the house as she does, even if I spend far less time here. So from a fairness point of view she is not getting a bad deal.

Ofcourse, if we are going to have children it will be different a bit. It is just an impossibilty to take care of a baby when I am at work, so then she will have to for that period a day. The fact I am not sure she can manage that is a main reason not to want them yet.

Laughing Shoo! You're dirtying up the thread.

Why not, I'm not sexist but it seems like we should have the same right? I see men rant and rave about women all the time on other threads and it really irks me Evil or Very Mad .

Thats perfecly FINE lonelyLady, but I seriously doubt thats gonna happen with most women. You see, many women-probably most, want children. When women have children they become very dependent and so marriage makes sense to keep men from running off and shirking their responsibility for the children they father. Also, there are VERY FEW women in this world who see men as human beings and not as sources of money, status, sympathy, and sperm. Men and Women just dont have that much in common. Its really a drag but its true.Might I add- you say you "hope" you never will? Keep in mind that here in the western world marriage is a MUTUAL CHOICE. If you dont wanna you dont gotta! And if you do get married you ALWAYS have the option of getting a divorce; so dont act like you're powerless when it comes to being married or not Wink.

holly cow, the reactions here amaze me. Why are you men getting so defensive? On average, women wipe your asses, cook your meals, wash your clothes, they sacrifice their personal happiness so that you could have a great career. Why is that making you angry? The statistics are the AVERAGE--meaning that yes, there are exceptions out there. If anything, you should show some compassion for the average woman who spends her entire adult life as a slave.

I will, after miss average comes here and clean my average house Smile.

Until then I am more concerned with my own situation. I must say my reaction was typed just after cleaning the toilet, doing the dishes, hanging the laundry and walking the dog. At other times I would have just ignored it Smile.

Edit: come to think of it I would not have ignored this. As a person I am about as far from perfect as clouds are from the Sahara. You can blame me of a lot of things. Probably I would not like it, but I would admit you are right.
Maybe because of this, maybe in spite of this I cannot handle being accused of everything I am not. I have a hard time handling my life and so I cannot take responsibility for the things done by the AVERAGE man, salesman, tall person, aspie (see a discussion in the strength topic in love and relationships), depressed person, not-rich person or university dropout. Just like I don't want to accuse everyone different from me of something just because they belong to a group.

We are talking free world women here right, not those born into bondage? I feel compassion for anyone born into bondage, fooled into bondage, or forced into bondage. But not so much compassion for those that bind themselves and cry about it. Your average woman that marries of her own accord is not a slave. In any way.

Oh, fyi I do feel bad for women being in a situation you are describing. I always felt it was very wrong when my mother did all the homework while my parents were both working fulltime. It is almost ironic how he has to do everything now she is disabled (braininfarct). I am glad things are better nowadays for most of the couples I know.

Oh, for most people 'having a great carreer' is just going to work so there's money to live.
