I have to vent and here seemed appropriate for now! I was transferred into this store/pharmacy as the assistant manager. I really thought the manager seemed cool and I had filled in there for a week a while back and thought I liked it. Well....this past month has been a nightmare. Not only has the manager used every excuse to get out of being there (3 out of 4 weeks she's been gone). So I'm expected to do 2 peoples jobs while she's gone. And that's not it, I can handle alot of work even though it's not pleasant. But the staff there is a bunch of back-biting gossiping bullies! They are horrible! They start out acting all nicey nice to win you over, and then start taking advantage. And god help me for trying to stand up for myself, it makes them worse. They are protected by the union so you almost can't fire them. You have to come up with a really damn good legitimate hard-evidence reason to get rid of them. I hate the union sooooo much. Anyways, just an example of today. We're already short staffed and my supervisor calls in and says she's not coming in because she doesn't feel good. So I have to work a double shift. There was no one else. Then the cashier, while I'm on the phone with the district manager, comes up and yells at me! She says "Thanks for the help" (very snotty and exasperated sounding) of course I'm all like "what are you talking about?" She says "I was paging you didn't you hear me?" I said "No I'm on the phone with the DM trying to get this sorted out" and she says "I'm going out to smoke!" and huffs out of the store leaving the front register unattended. So I had to end my call with the DM early just to cover her stupid behind. And then to add insult to injury when she comes back, I thought she'd apologize. But no! She says "you shouldn't have rolled your eyes at me". I couldn't believe what I was hearing! I told her never to speak like that to me again and she says "ok game on". What the hell that's supposed to mean is yet to be determined. I'm the asst. mgr. and they're talking to me like they run the place, being nasty, calling in, it's ridiculous! All while the manager is gone. I guess they figure they can get away with it. I am at my witts end with these bitches.

Soundl like this store has a very strong culture of workplace bullying. From what I have experienced myself, I believe that most workplaces have at least one serial bully. The bully is usually very adept at manipulating other staff into engaging in bullying behaviours too, resulting in a phenomenon known as 'mobbing'. Female bullies are experts in deliberately increasing the target's stress load, so that the target will respond in ways that can then be twisted around and used against her. They are also experts in the subtle manipulation of other worker's perceptions of the target.

Here are some tips that I have found helpful:
Document every incident/interaction.
Don't cover for anyone.
Don't trust anyone.
Do some major stress management after each work day.
Report your concerns in writing to the head of the organization (your District Manager?).
Research workplace bullying.
Read everything on this website: http://www.kickbully.com particularly the Field Guide - it provides loads of useful information!

Workplace bullies target people who have integrity, ethics, honesty, competency, strong work values, etc. - SO IT IS NO WONDER THAT US ASPIES ARE SO FREQUENTLY TARGETTED!

Take care nettiespaghetti, and good luck Smile .
