Some can and some cannot. I would never say NO because there are too many people who want to find a reason to eliminate autistic and asperger people.
Inability to contribute to corporate greed and be a cog to fatten some guys' 401 K accounts is reason enough.
Finances trump humanity every time.
So I would say YES even if it is not true because I am not fond of the idea that lack of ability to work=elimination.
A little black and white, I know, but I like us. |

I believe that those of us who have the ability should band together and advocate for those who can't. As society is right now I don't think that all of us with AS (or many other traits that society chooses to ignore or label bad) could.
The trick is getting society to see what everyone here and around us has to offer. I have seen more than my fair share of people who are gainfully employed, even supporting families, who are only alive because their mistakes prevent their other mistakes from killing them and others. Fear of differences is a disgusting scourge that plagues the world and should be stomped out.
In fact, I will start raising some noise here. |

Yes, there are SOME AS who will never hold productive jobs.
BUT
IF we are WILLING to work, and WILLING to do some of the less appetizing jobs with lesser "status"
The VAST MAJORITY of us can eventually find someplace where we can be productive.
We may have longer periods of unemployment, and lose some jobs because we p---ed someone off,
but
we should still spend more months with job than without
IF AND ONLY IF
we view being unemployed means spending at least 40 hours a week looking for work! | If I were unemployed, I'd only spend a few hours a week looking for work because what would be the point of spending as much time as I would in full time work on a search that would only turn up limited options?
If somebody wants to do that, I say good for them but it shouldn't be obligatory for those who are aren't "wired" for most types of work. _________________ Break out you Western girls,

I tend to associate NOBS' type of reply with NTs. Depressing to see that attitude coming from someone on the spectrum.
I am financially dependent on my family at age 37. It sucks. Job hunting and working suck worse. (I have AS + depression, if it's not obvious by the rest of the post.) For me, being a wage slave in a workplace is hell, with one exception: the workplace hell has an exit door, and I choose it every time.
If I were the type to waste my time wishing for things, I would wish that I were not driven into a rage by the prospect of doing someone else's bidding for money. But I don't waste my time thusly, and I don't control those emotions that well up in me every second, every minute of every hour I am in someone's employ.
There is something to be grasped beyond theory of mind - theory of varied minds, each filtered through a different set of life experiences. NOBS, you are missing the second one for sure, and maybe the first as well. |

The question isn't about whether a job has "status" or not. It's whether or not you can make enough $$$ to live on your own. I only make $11/ hour in a factory type setting. I'm good at assembling, electronics, welding and hold some computer certifications.
Whenever I try to go to an office environment, I interview real well and then I'm fired for not fitting in or for whatever reason. I show up and work hard. I've even asked why this happens in a white collar setting & I'm told that it just doesn't work out or the backlog was cleared or so on. I'm not picking on people, yelling at them or mistreating them. I've never been accused of that and I always show up on time. I have the clothes and dress nicely. On an assembly line, that is no problem. In an office, some other sort of thing is going on, some type of head game other then the job (keeping XP and M$ Office happy)
Even though they are unfocused and totally disorganized and don't even follow half of their own procedures, I get the blame. Its always that you're the nicest guy and we'll give you a great reference but...
My doctor said that 50 years ago, this diagnosis didn't exist because production type jobs paid well enough to feed a family of 5 or 6 people. Therefore, no maladjustment existed to justify diagnosis and treatment.
The problem seems to be the economy as much as anything. In order to succeed today, you need to be a bisexual mind reading sociopath with perfect movie star looks. Anyone else is flat out broke or mired in credit card debt.
Question: Who has decent factory type jobs that pay well on the east coast Mid-Atlantic region? I don't mind harsh conditions in the least. I'm smart and have a very high threshold for pain. I just want to get $35 to $40k/yr or so. |

I do not function in the corporate world. With a little help and several times over more effort, I can become successful doing what I am good at. Sometimes it just takes time.
