I have always wanted to establish a Wiki around resources for adults on the autistic spectrum. There's plenty of sources out there for children and parents, but so few for adults. Sure, a person could go to sites like WrongPlanet.net, but sometimes the search engine is down and trying to comb through the archives is a pain in the neck - and even then, there may not be any help posted for that state. With a Wiki, everyone can participate - even parents! - and bring together other members of online autistic communities to form a central core of knowledge (the list of state resources). My goal is create a comprehensive, one-stop-shop of resources for autistic adults.

For this assignment, I need to design an actual community of practice. I do not have to neccessarily create one, but since I was going to do so this summer, why in the heck not get started? The Wiki will not be a permanent application on this site - it would be hosted on another web server. So, for all practices of this class, I would like to survey this community so I can get some idea of where to take this idea.

The typical rules of privacy apply. If you do not want your name given, please give me an alternative. You may either post your answers to this forum, PM me, or email me at spalmer@umd.edu

The final paper is due on May 07, 2008.

I would like opinions, suggestions, and comments about the following questions:

Community Roll Out Plan Survey

1. How would you imagine the design?

2. What purpose would the creation of such a community propose (aka goals)?

3. How could the Wiki relate to other autistic communities?

4. What technologies, resources, and/or deliverables would be most useful (aka what type of Wiki, platforms, etc. - don't worry if you don't know!)

5. What are some suggestions to get people actively involved and participate in the creation of such a Wiki (aka motivation)?

6. How do you envision the running of such a Wiki (for example, monitoring posts, editing, keeping away flamers and troublemakers)?

7. Comments or questions I might have missed.

Thank you!

- Serenity

That is a good idea Smile

I would suggest that it is simmilar to wikipedia or even linked to wikipedia (I think I can link it)

there should be a massive links page that connects most resources people know of to the wiki

it should be open source like wikipedia

enocurage people to add what htey want simmilar to the way wikipedia does it (there will need to be some mods incase of vandalism)

there should also be way for people to come out about their porfessions if they want to, just an idea.
