Let's all show our gratitude toward Cuba's new president, who has been introducing new reforms to reverse some of the damage his older brother did in almost 50 years of Communist dictatorship. Under Raul, Cubans are now permitted new civil liberties, bans on cell phones and computers have been lifted, and now some elements of capitalism are coming in as wage equality comes to an end. Under Fidel, doctors and farm laborers earned the same salary, but under Raul workers will have the opportunity to earn more by being more productive. Cuba still has a long way to go, and is far from perfect, but I personally greatly admire Raul and everything he is trying to do to get Cuba back on track. It takes a great deal of courage for someone like Raul, who really only has power by virtue of being Fidel's brother, to come in after decades of Communist rule and introduce these new reforms.

There have been periods of liberalization in the Cuban economy before, but they were reversed. Too soon to say if Raul is committed to the reforms.

True. Still, with a new leader, and given that some of these reforms are pretty radical (well, by Cuban standards at least) I'm optimistic. It would help if America would normalize trade relations with Cuba, since that would help to introduce more capitalism into Cuba's economy, and economic freedom tends to get people to demand personal freedom as well.

Overall, you're asking the wrong web community for gladness toward capitalism.
WrongPlanet clearly prefers anarchy, communism, and socialism to democracy or capitalism,
because they hate America. And indeed, there are many admirers of Fidel here.

But I, for one, approve of Raul's improvements to the state of his country since the Fidel era.

Anarchy is not incompatible with capitalism (the only anarchists I've seen on this forum are anarcho-capitalists) and socialism and democracy often go hand in hand. I haven't seen anyone here express support for Fidel.

But I like Raul. I'm hoping that he becomes Cuba's Mikhail Gorbachev.

I'm expanding this into the general appreciation thread for great political leaders, since there was not apparently enough interest in just Raul Castro.

I would like to express support for Morgan Tsvangirai, who is risking his life to bring freedom to Zimbabwe.

Also Sarkozy in France for taking the unpopular stance to end some of the more ridiculous union abuses.

Mikhail Gorbachev, though long out of power, liberalized the Soviet Union with Glasnost and Perestroika and gave the Russian people greater freedom.

Any others you can think of, preferably fairly recent? I don't know my Latin American politics very well, so I'm not too familiar with any of their leaders.

Wow, it is possible to change the thread title. I did not know that.

I would like to add Pierre Elliott Trudeau he a was a very controversial leader who is loved and hated here in Canada, he was also very well traveled, in the eastern block countries, and was friends with Fidel Castro. Raul hasn't been in the limelight and so far he's doing an excellent job.

a good portion of the population here leans more towards libertarian....so you're wrong.

Another example of Ragtime's truth.

well, I'm glad for this, although I don't think capitalism in its pure form would work for Cuba, being a developed country would it? that seem to work well only for industralized countries, most likely a combination of capitalism and socialism.

I don't see how socialism can be worse than anarchism, to be honest, socialism doesn't seem that bad really depending on how it would be done, remember that Heaven is a socialist utopia Wink

Ragtime being glad of Raul makes me feel ashamed to appreciate him too.

why? there's bound to be some level of overlap in everyone's ideals and beliefs eventually.

i find the whole thing kinda weird, though...like it's not real. i mean fidel is still alive and raul was so involved in his brother's administration...it just seems really questionable. if it's honest, i say great and it's much needed. but i'm skeptical of it.

Raul allows cellphones and computers to reach a market where the majority can't even afford either one and he is considered an amazing leader?

Well, he is permitting Cubans new freedoms. He is also beginning to allow more economic opportunity so that more Cubans will be able to work hard to get ahead and then be able to afford these things. And many Cubans have been purchasing cell phones, DVD players, and other previously illegal consumer goods. A computer is still a bit pricey for the average Cuban.
