"Thu, 03 Jul 2008 15:31:16 We Have a Winner! It took two hours and twenty five minutes, but we finally had a player hit a royal flush. Joe "The Show" Gualtieri, on Red #4, Seat 8, rivered a royal flush against one opponent but could not convince his opponent to call his river bet. Gualtieri will receive a $100 gift certificate from Professional Massage, the official massage therapist of the World Series of Poker. Gualtieri told us that he hopes that Harrah's and the World Series of Poker, who charged players in today's event 4.2% as a house vig ($420 a player) will take $5,000 out of the roughly $2,000,000 in house vig they will collect from the Main Event and donate it to the Autism Canada Foundation, a charitable organization based in Canada devoted to engaging, educating, empowering and uniting people to find a cure for autism. Autism Speaks already has a Canada division though, and this ain't it. _________________ My site: Thoughts of an Autistic (updated May 20, 2008)

main page:
| Quote: | | Autism Canada would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of Gabriel Poirier. Like all Canadians, the reports we are reading give us much concern and leave us deeply saddened. Clearly better guidelines need to be in place for the use of weighted therapeutic blankets but also parents have to be informed and consent to treatments their children receive. If anything good can come of this it is that our governments will take action on this now epidemic health crisis. Not only do we need better guidelines for all treatments but we need research into both the causes and cures. |
About us page:
| Quote: | Autism Canada's aim is to shift the paradigm from living with Autism Spectrum Disorder to actively treating it.
Advice to Parents
Please question service providers that tell you there is only one "proven" treatment. Please question them if they say that children do not recover from autism. We think they are wrong. There is solid research and statistical evidence to prove this position wrong. The children who recover are real. There are children who are no longer considered "in the spectrum" in accordance with the accepted psychological definition. Some parents write books about them, other parents just celebrate privately. Please don't give up hope that your child will recover. |
Oh, yay. Just what we need. I'm really not sure I wanted to know about this organization. Oh, well. |

| It looks like a Canadian version of DAN! or NAA, which is probably just as bad or even worse than Autism Speaks. |

OK, I didn't really do a lot of research on the charity I just thought that it was nice of the guy. _________________ "Was that the bad thing?"

Well, I'm sure he had good intentions, but that doesn't necessarily make his actions right. There are plenty of evil organizations that present themselves as warm and fuzzy, and only wanting to help people. That's why it's important to investigate charities before you give. Of course, sometimes despite our best efforts, we still get fooled. Or, as I think is the case with Gualtieri, we fail to question the dominant paradigm and the damage it can cause. I don't condemn Gualtieri for his efforts, but if I think it is right to question if this was the best organization he could support. |
