Since the foreign language forum is dead, I thought I'd try here. My latest fixation is Latin which I've just started to study. I've already done a year's worth of Spanish, so it is not to unfamiliar to me as Spanish is derived from Latin. So to begin:

Salvete amici lingua latinae! Quid agitis?
(Greetings friends of Latin! How are you all?)

Ego non psittacum sum, sed amici mei psittacos sunt
(I am not a parrot, but my friends are parrots.)

Post quips or phrases you've made or discuss any Latin related thing here.

Si vis pacem parabellum. If you want peace, prepare for war.

That's probably 50% of my Latin right there Iamnotaparakeet. Smile I like the one you posted for Anzac Day.

(If you can read this bumper sticker, you are both very well educated and much too close )

Si non confectus, non reficiat. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.) Laughing

At some point I think I translated Humpty Dumpty into Latin, but all I can remember of it is:
Omnes regis equi omnesque virorum
Invenire non poterat omnes fragmentorum.

All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty back together again.

But, I wanted to give it a nursury-rhyme rhythm, so it literally says:
All the king's horses and all of the men
Couldn't find all of the pieces.

which is what I always thought it meant, anyway. You have to stress the first Omnes on the wrong (second) syllable, but otherwise it works.

Mea culpa. Debebat, "liberate me ex navi!" using the dative, right?

Are you using a mix of Spanish? Because I just can't understand some of the words.

No, "mea culpa" and "Liberate me ex navi! Non servus remi sum!" are Latin. Means, "my fault" and "let me out of this ship! I'm not a oar-slave!" Do you remember that the Romans used slaves to power the oars on their triremes?

They are really cool ships, triremes were one of my fixations at one time.
