For years now, I’ve had this intermittent problem with a couple of my toes. It’ll become itchy for about a week and go away almost as suddenly as it began. After the itching subsides, I’ll find that it’s crusted over along the first knuckle crease of the toe. About a week from that, it becomes very tough and scaly and I’m able to peel it off without any effort as if I’m peeling an orange.

I don’t know what it is and I’ve tried various ointments and powders for it including Cortisone, Gold-Bond (both in the goldenrod can and the green one), both of which have temporary cooling effects but the problem persists. I’ve also tried Lotrimin and number of Rx creams and ointments we have around the house hoping that a shot in the dark would hit the bull’s-eye.

Do you find it happens more often if you were a particular type of shoe? It could be caused by friction.

Do you expose your bare feet to space heaters? My toes do the exact same thing whenever they're near heaters (which I need to keep them warm) for extended periods.

As far as moisturizers go, look for Aquaphor. It's expensive but good--used it on my neck the other day for razor burn and worked within 15 minutes.
