The Daily Telegraph has revealed that Nicky Reilly has Asperger's syndrome, as I suspected.
Mr. Reilly, a resent convert to Islam, tried to detonate a homemade bomb in Exeter, United Kingdom, yesterday. They are saying that he was the victim of Muslim extremists, who brain washed him and persuaded him to try to carry a bombing.
"Senior police sources said that the alleged corruption of a vulnerable young man - who suffered from Asperger's Syndrome, had a history of self harm and had attempted suicide several times - was a "new horrific low" for Muslim extremism in Britain."
I find this very upsetting.

The thing is, we ARE easily led.
We can be wayyyyy too trusting. No fault of ours, and it shouldn't be a problem, except for the not-so-nice people out there who will take advantage of us.
Guys, think of this as a warning. Still be trusting and all, but don't be too trusting _________________ "It isn't wrong, but we just don't do it."

Ya, I mean I think I definatly can be a little bit over trusting, even when I should not be, but something like that>???!!!!
Ya, I have a hard time beleiveing he didnt understand what he was doing, and should be punished just like anyone else, thats terrorism no matter what. _________________ DX'ed with HFA as a child. One advantage of being raised by a cop is sense that there's always "bad guys" (and girls). _________________ Yeah with all of these men lining up to get neutered

It sounds like he believed in what he is doing. Unfortunately when someone is branded with a disability or isn't a member of the "majority" the media feels they can ignore that person's actual intentions and feelings in favour of stamping the situation with their own.

I feel for Nicky Reilly whilst I don't condone his actions I can understand how a lonely vulnerable and immature aspie which he was could get sucked into something like this even though he might know it was "wrong" he wanted friends, wanted to be liked and found it in all the wrong places. The people who took advantage of him are monsters IMO beleive me I have been lead in one way or another fortunately nothing too serious. I hope he gets treatmewnt and help whilst he is in jail. I too am a lonelyl, vulnerable aspie with few friends.

According to the Daily Mail (dear lord, the worst 'real paper' in existence - was just flicking through it in a checkout line) he 'suffered from autism and schizophrenia' - didn't say anything about AS.
Guess this is about what you can expect from the reporting of mainstream media though. _________________ We are a fever, we are a fever, we ain't born typical...

Yeah I have read a lot of articles online about this and some mention Asperger's by name whilst others refer to it as "autism" and like you said this a mistake often made in the media it gives the public a false view of the condition.

just because someone has classic autism does not mean are more likely than someone with as to be a terrorist, neither does it automatically mean the autie is mentally retarded [the common but mistaken reason why aspies on here do not like being associated with autism].
LeKewi,
am have read elsewhere not one mention of autism,it said he has a low IQ and is mentally retarded, why cant none of the official places get it right or are they all only guessing at it? _________________ [LFAutie]

Probably a combination of guessing at it, not understanding any of the conditions anyway, and ignorantly assuming one equals the other, for example autism equals retardation, or schizophrenia equals psychopathy. _________________ We are a fever, we are a fever, we ain't born typical...

People on the autistic spectrum are incredibly gullible, and I think it takes gullibility to think we are fighting in a cause and can actually be an asset to that cause. Especially if someone is going to take an interest in us and 'groom' us - we would do anything for them.
I know because I was 'recruited' for being a drug mule in much the same way.
We are ideal for being used if we are isolated from any other reality and literally don't know any better and sometimes even if we do know better.

I personally cannot stand the term "autism spectrum" IMO autism and AS are two seperate and very different conditions I do not identify as "autistic" but as an aspie. The only timr I ever use autism is if I am explaining to someone who doesn't understand about as I then say it is a "form of autism" but different to classic autism. I just wish the media wouls correctly identify that he has As and not "autism".
