I've always had a problem with names that I consider either stupid, or "not real names." My first day of school, I bumped into a girl. The teacher said "Say sorry to Tammy." I still remember my horror....TAMMY?? THAT'S NOT A NAME!!!! I immediately shoved Tammy. I was not normally a violent child but the name Tammy was so repulsive to me I wanted nothing to do with her. (I ended up friends with Tammy in the 6th grade and quite like the name now, but I'd never heard the name before that.)
I still have a problem with stupid names. Idiotic made up trendified names particularly annoy me. For example I know a boy called Bayden. As far as I'm concerned, Bayden is not a name. Aiden is a name, Hayden is a name, but Bayden is NOT. I think celebrities should be shot for some of the names they have given kids..."Apple" is just sick. Geri Halliwell called her daughter Bluebell Madonna...it should be illegal (in Sweden and France it IS illegal!) I don't want anything to do with someone who has a stupid name or has given kids stupid names so I won't be hanging out with celebrities any time soon. |

Just want to point out that most of us don't get to pick our names any more than our neurology..you want to beat the parents, that's another matter but not the kids.  (It's also very expenssive to get your name changed and probably pretty hard for most people to get used to after 18 years of one name.)

| Why are unique names "stupid"? To me, they don't reflect poorly on the intelligence of either the kid or the parents who named him or her. The purpose of those names is to hopefully give the kids more of a sense of individuality than if they shared their names with 1 out of 30 kids in their school or something. While some names are cute in an annoying way (such as if the first and last name rhyme or sound like a common phrase), ones like Tammy seem perfectly normal to me. I have never heard of Bayden as a first name, but Baden has been used as a last name in the past (such as in the case of Boy Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell). |

talking about stupid names, you should heard jason lee named his name, wait for it.......Pilot Inspektor!!! and no, i am not making this one up, look it up, im not kidding. he is going to have a daughter i think, god knows what names he is going to give her.
in my opinion, names are an interpretation of how parents wish to view their child as.therefore, this is why we kept seeing really weird names, but otherwise seems normal to the parents |

| The name "Trevor" is the first one that came to mind when I saw this thread's subject line. I've never known anyone personally with that name either. |

Nope. To me, a name is just a name and isn't connected to the person who's called it at all. It's a label to identify someone with, so what if it sounds "stupid"? What defines a name? A group of letters formed together to make a word thats placed on your birth certificate. In all seriousness, I rarely use peoples names anyway and don't care what they are.

Yeah I have a pretty strong dislike for weird names. I don't really know why. I suppose I just have a sort-of sensor for what the world should be like, and made-up names grate on it the way that bad grammar does. I wouldn't have a problem with Tammy though: that's just short for Tamara, which is a real name. I don't like it as a name, but it's definitely a real name.
What drives me nuts is new, weird spellings for established names. Aimee and so on.

| I have a problem with cutesie nicknames, especially when the name they're derived from is perfectly acceptable and could be used instead. My most grating example: KATY. The name Katherine is lovely and has a certain dignity to it, so why shorten it to ugly, infantile nicknames like Kathy and Katy? I laboured under such a nickname for sixteen years before I finally convinced my family to call me Katherine, and I noticed instantly that strangers had more respect for me when we were introduced. I find it irresponsible of parents to give children nicknames that are going to get them taunted and not taken seriously. |

I agree to an extent. After all, my birth name is Steffani, rather than Stephanie. I don't mind odd spellings, but what some celebrities name their kids ... it's completely ridiculous.
For example: Sailor Lee Brinkley Cook - named by Christy Brinkley & Peter Cook.
Sailor Moon, anyone? 
Also, Daisy Boo Oliver - named by Jamie Oliver & Juliette Norton.
There's a whole lot of others here. |

I don't necessarily have an issue with strange names, but I do believe that names should be carefully considered and do have meaning that you stick a child with for the rest of their life (or at least 18 years.)
What I do have a problem with is parents naming their children things just to, basically, slap society in the face and names that show absolutely no respect for the child. A friend of a relative named his daughter, phonetically, Sha-thee-id. I have a feeling that the name is going to be bleeped but I will type it anyway. Shithead. He also has a son who's middle name is Reefer. sigh. |

I hated my name, because it was so normal...Kathy (not Katherine or Kathleen...just Kathy) so I changed it.
My sons are Hunter and Storm...both are old English names. I wanted something unique, but real.
I understand completely how it isn't a kids fault, you do wanna smack the parents though. It's the odd spellings and completely retarded made-up names that irritate me. However...once I get to know someone, they aren't the name anymore, they are the person, so the name is irrelevent.
Foreign names don't bother me at all. So Zahara, or Tzipurah I find quite beautiful.
In the end...I'll raise my eyebrow at the parents...but keep my mouth shut. |

I like names that are unique, but not completely outrageous. For example, my favorite boys' names are Ichabod, Adrian and Elijah. There are exceptions, though: I think Silent Night would be a beautiful name.

We chose to spare the substitute teachers some pain and gave our kids traditional names with traditional spellings. No child of ours will have a silent hyphenated Q in their name.

Heavens, how could you be so mean to someone born with a disability like that?  It's not like the kid could pick her own name... she was born with it. Heck, my own name, "Isaac", was a source of much shame growing up. If anything, you should pity these poor souls, tell them where they can find the paperwork to change their names... and then leave a flaming paper bag of human dookie on their parents' front porch.
