Here's why you shouldn't propose publicly to your girlfriend:

Ouch. The basketball game one seemed especially bad; I mean, she just ran from him.

I always wondered what motivated people to do public proposals like that. Unless you've talked about it before, there's always that chance that she'll say no, which would be embarrassing.

I've always suspected guys do it to pressure the girl to say yes.

If she says no publicly, she disappoints the crowd and risks being disliked by the crowd.

I'd be mortified if a guy did that to me, even if I wanted to say yes.

Some guys do it like that because it's a PDA on a massive level. Rather than just kissing in front of everyone, it's saying, "HEY EVERYONE WE DON'T KNOW! WE'RE GETTING MARRIED! CHEER GODDAMNIT!"

Ew.

This is why you probe beforehand on whether or not she would say yes. You also never propose in public like that, again, unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure she will say yes, and know it for fact...

That is a bit interesting. I could only imagine how uncomfortable that would be for him. I would laugh, but it's too sad to laugh at. Some poor guys got their hearts ripped out, in front of the entire world at that...
