I seem to feel like I'm the only one here who had been diagnosed by Doctor Attwood himself.... Confused

I have read some of his research and have a great deal of respect for him, but I am American, and so have never met Dr. Attwood in person.

Nah, Julie Fox (who so happened to work for him at the time). She was a nice lady; I only saw her for a single consultation for 30 minutes with my mother, and she told me I had Asperger's within several minutes; she said she could change the Autism* diagnosis over to Asperger's if I wanted her to. She revealed a lot of information about Asperger's that I wasn't aware of, the ability to focus on things outside of the all-encompassing interest for only 15 or so minutes, and then a break is needed for 10 or so if one is to function well.

*HFA and AS are the same thing to them. It's either hardly any speech at all [as an adult], or speech as an adult (AS for the latter).

I saw Professor Attwood looking at me as I was swaying and listening to my MP3 player in their god-awful reception area, if that amounts to anything; also, the clinic is dead centre in the middle of the city, I mean, come on. I'm supposed to go there every fortnight, but I don't, due to the location of such (they do house visits, but we're too far away); they can't really do much for me anyway, as I know how to do CBT, relaxation therapy, etcetera, for anxiety.

The best part about going to an autism clinic is seeing all of the other individuals with such, and how it manifests differently in each individual, i.e., a young boy building a...building of blocks, and pushing it over, repetitively, and another boy who doesn't let go of his mother.

Also of note, all of the young adults I've seen there have been with a parent, mostly males with their mothers, and an odd female with the same.

I read some of a book by Attwood. Sounded a bit condesending to me. Like, "they don't feel emotions or function right so there not as good as us." That's what I got from it.

Well, he seemed like a nice guy to me.

If you go to his site there is a radio interview with him (bottom left of the main page), and he sounded very sympathetic toward aspies, expressing a pretty deep understanding of how we are often misperceived and underappreciated in the workplace. Smile

I've met him and he sort of qualified my diagnosis, if that means anything... I didn't know it at the time but I'd been diagnosed more or less, but it was a seminar of his that I first learned about it (parents took me there under false pretences then went "Oh, by the way, you've got it!") not that I hadn't figured it out, given that pretty much everything they said about it I had and was sitting thinking "Oh, I do that... and that... and that... and that... and that... wow... crap... and that too...". He kinda confirmed it for me. Really good guy!

Okay, so I can kinda count that, as my counsellor at the time (a protege of Attwood's) had all but diagnosed me, but it was only when I was brought to Attwood's rooms (in Garden City at the time) that I even heard of Asperger's Syndrome.

If I may admit my ignorance... I don't understand why this is an exceptional status; would you please explain it to me?

Good point. It's just that Attwood is probably the leading authority on AS. I just thought that with over 10,000 members, there may be someone other than myself who was diagnosed by him. Besides, as a technicality I will accept, LeKiwi, I'm the only one. Sad

A clique of one is no fun.

Maybe in terms of clinical practice, but I would say that Baron-Cohen has probably published better research.

Thank you; I did not mean to offend, just didn't have a perspective of understanding. I'd welcome someone with knowledge and insight looking at my situation at a diagnostic level. It's good that you have such a benefit of experience.

I don't live in England.

I don't live in England.

And I live in neither England nor Australia, so looks like I'm pretty much out of luck regardless. Since there are no experts in my area, I content myself with reading research, which Baron-Cohen has done quite a bit of. I also like Dawson's work, though she focuses more on classic autism.
