At my graduation, my psychiatrist briefly talked about Aspergers
before handing me my diploma.

My grandparents were present
and they want to know more about Aspergers and autism.
They never knew I have Aspergers until now.

They are from a Bible Belt state with
a strong Christian culture.

What is the best thing to do?

don't be ashamed about it, its nothing you did to yourself, and people, including grand parents should be understanding.

A: Your shrink shouldn't have done that. It's your place to tell. But...

B: Since he/she let the cat out of the bag, you've got a few options. One is trying to explain Aspergers the best you can, but if that doesn't work for you, try getting some printed material. Stuff you find on the internet, maybe a copy of the DSM's listing... anything that you think may be helpful. And answer their questions.

You say they come from the bible belt like it's a bad thing. Honestly, that works in your favor. People who have faith are often a bit more tolerant of little differences like that. It's usually the major things that start wars. J/K.

Just don't worry to much about it, they are your grandparents. They'll love ya no matter what.

You should simply be proud of your academic accomplishments and high school graduation...

For starters, I am very glad I graduated
and am looking forward to my studies
at a community college this fall.

Beforehand, I told my psychiatrist it was fine
to talk about Aspergers before
the presentation of my diploma.

My grandparents have NEVER heard of Aspergers or autism
before Thursday night and it's all new to them.
They are really deep in their conservative Christian faith
and it may be a bit awkward to talk about AS to them.

Also, my mom claims to have never heard of Aspergers either,
despite going to multiple IEP meetings during my high school career.

I am very thrilled to say I am a high school graduate
with Aspergers and proud of it! Razz Razz Razz
