I didn't like a lot of people around your age, it took me many years to realize I was the one, well as I thought had to change... of course that was wrong as had no idea was on the autism spectrum.. so taken me many years to revert back, find myself again and this all takes time, to adjust and find who we are when others often want to change us through no thought of there own really, just generally do not understand our differences.... but I do know quite often there is another reason when one finds fault with everyone or thing!

Hope you can make sense of my cascade of chaotic thoughts... Wink

It's best not to get down about some negative stories, there are good and bad people everywhere in the world.
I bet those robbers were probably high on drugs or something.

NZ is still a great country to live. Yeah I don't like how we are getting more violent.

I would love to go to NZ, I hear there is lots of great fishing there, lots of parrots, and its an incredibly beautiful country.
Bad things do happen in other countries, Canada is thought to be a nice safe country, but our city's can be very dangerous, we have lots of street crime and home invasions. I am not sure what the crime statistics are in NZ but I would tend to think they would be lower the the US and Canada

Many people here in NZ are either on drugs or alcoholics. Did you see the Aspie guy last night who was jailed for rape cause he looked different? He had an alibi. At least they quashed his conviction albeit after 5 years.

What? You can't jail someone because they "look different". I don't think that's true.

I agree with alcoholics.. everyone here seems to have a complex with getting drunk all the time.. and you are "no fun" unless you do.

The cop who arrested him placed convictions before justice. He did not notify the defence of DNA evidence that exonerated the defendant. and the defence attorney was incompetent - he didn't call the defendant's friend who provided the alibi. This cop no longer works for the police, thankfully.

As for this latest shooting, the bloke who took the alcopops left change on the counter. He may have been too scared to get involved, not known what else he could do.

I think the ambulance delay was unacceptable, as members of the public were in the shop with the victim minutes after he was shot. You cannot claim there is still danger to the public in those circumstances.

Anyway, 4 people have been arrested, and more may be soon.

In the meantime, an 80-something old Asian woman was wounded in a home invasion and later died in hospital, and another asian woman was the victim of a "drive-by bag snatching", she gave chase and was run over by the offender's vehicle. She also died in hospital.

The finger is being pointed at drink and drugs, there has been a rise in violence since the legal drinking age was lowered to 18. Hale_Bopp is right to imply there is a strong culture amongst teens and young adults associating binge drinking as the main way to have a good time. And the prevalence of drugs such as "P / Ice" or methamphetamines have been in many headlines over the past few years. But they aren't the only issues to consider.

I think Counties Manukau (where this crime surge is located) has usually had more than it's fair share of crime. It has had higher poverty and unemployment, historically. Do keep in mind that these recent crimes made the headlines because of their senselessness and brutality.

Counties Manukau was predominantly of Maori ethnicity, but recently other ethnic groups, especially Indian and Asian, have risen in population. Criminals may see them as easier game, and Tuesday night's edition of "close-up" (17/6/2008) didn't help, showing that Asian woman in Counties Manukau may be lax with handbag security, often carrying large sums of cash inside, not securing their handbags in the car before putting away groceries, and so on.

Some Maori who have travelled to the big cities seeking better employment, have lost touch with their "Tribal Identity", and the cultural benefits it gave, such as a sense of belonging, acceptance in the community, grater social support, etc. Perhaps this is why Urban Maori are over-represented in affiliation to specific Gangs - Gang Affiliation may fill the void that is normally filled by Tribal Identity. Add poverty and you have the foundations for organised crime.

So I suspect that Gangs and immigrant naivety about crime and security, also need to be considered alongside Drink and Drugs.

I wonder if the Killer Beez Gang could be linked?

Here in the US, most liquor store owners have a very efficient method for dealing with robbers; shooting them! It tends to work fairly well, the re-offending rate is quite low...

Those are statistically rarer down here, want to guess why? Very Happy

At least you all don't have the death penalty.

On a semi-related subject, a couple of people have told me that Australia is like Texas without guns or the death penalty. Sounds good to me.

Plus, it's home to some of my favorite bands ever. I might just pack up and move there.

Not sure if I should wait until my lease runs out - can your landlord hold you accountable for abandonment if you disappear into another country for a few years?

Lol @ killer beez.

I keep hearing that name but they just sound ridiculous. I mean, what kind of a name is that?! Sounds like a bunch of schoolkids who are too big for their boots and need a good kick up the backside.

Mongrel mob and black power both at least sound a bit intimidating... 'killer beez'?! Ha! Makes me want to giggle.

Are they actually scary at all?

Colourway Records vs Dawn Raid Label
The Kiwi Underbelly
Raid on Killer Beez
On the rise of youth violence

Yes. Shocked

They probably have been involved in several random, brutal attacks on bystanders walking through auckland late at night. This includes one attack that occured on the harbourfront, a man was left nearly dead lying in a pool of his own blood. I think he needed reconstructive surgery afterwards.

Killer Beez are a youth offshoot of the Tribesmen (motorcycle gang).

If they want to actually be intimidating they ought to come up with a more scary/less childish name. I'd be inclined to laugh at someone who came up to me and said "Yo! I'm a killer bee, ow cuzz bro..."

We don't have it. That's what jail does... with our tax money. As many criminals as you put in jail there will always be more.

Yes, NZ's drinking culture sucks. Most young people think that the only way to have fun is to be so drunk they can't remember anything. If you're thinking of moving here, don't bother. Food is expensive, gas is way more expensive than in the US even taking into account the exchange rate. Your kids will get turned into vegetables by the education system and grow up to be alcoholics. Go to Scandinavia. Tax is high but the hospital system actually works, the police aren't brainwashed and the education is decent.

...on the flipside, New Zealand's pretty once you get out of Auckland. I live near Wellington... good vibes in that city, but the natural landscape is much nicer.
