I'm pretty lost here.
My boyfriend lives about 45 minutes away from me, and we only see each other on weekends. That's the problem. I don't know how to talk on the phone--I mean, I'm terrible at it. There are always long, awkward pauses where I don't know what to say. In person I'm a lot better, because I'm very comfortable with this guy, but on the phone I'm just so lost. I don't like talking on the phone to anyone, and I seem to be far more self conscious on the phone.

How can I improve my communication over this medium?

Worry not, awkwardness was never a repulsive trait in girl that guys may be turned off by. In fact, many guys like shy girls. It's only a turn off for girl, most of them at least.. this is the reason#1 of why male aspies usually don't get a gf while almost every female aspie has a bf .

You should only worry about that for career issues tho and not for relationships...

PS: I can hear you screaming *SEXIST POST* but oh well ...what I said is the whole truth. The 2 genders' preferences are not the same.

Unless you talk about serious serious stuff, like feelings or problems or stuff like that,
a long pause is a good hint to talk about a new subject.

Good things would be..telling about something funny that happened, something fun you planning to do soon, asking how the others day was, the weather..

If you've been talking for over 30-60 minutes, and they're nothing left to talk about, is a good time to you know.. talk the next day? Wink

I have been with my boyfriend for several years, and i still can't talk to him on the phone for more than a few moments without painful akwardness.
I hope you have told him of the difficulty you have with talking on the phone so that hopefully he can be understanding of it.
