David Lynch? I sometimes wonder if he has AS, and his movies are extremely bizarre.
I once took a course in college called Literature and Film. I did horrible on the book aspect, but much better on the film aspect. I found it easier to work out characters while watching them. When reading about them, all I could see was words, and each new concept that arose screwed up my thought process. I found myself re-reading paragraphs a number of times. That's how I am with novels. I can't divulge characters' emotions in a book unless they are specifically told. If I keep re-reading certain lines, then I can get a little idea, but it's just too frustrating.
I'm not too sure what a 'subtle social cue' really is, but I can only depict emotions while watching people if they laugh, yell, or whatever they do that is not a part of their usual personality. I have apparently became better at this than when when I was younger, or so I've been told.
Now, if I were to direct or write a script. I don't know about directing, but writing probably would not be a problem for me. I am exceptionally good with words and like to write from a visual perspective.

I am a film director and screenwriter living in LA, have been for several years. I got diagnosed about six months ago, and I was curious about whether I'd be barred from my passion as a fully-fledged career because my thinking is very literal, and CREATING stories seems to be such an intuitive activity, and one that involves a lot of emotional analysis.
I have trouble because I become over-involved with the structure of the story.
I have trouble empathizing with characters as I write them, understanding their emotion.
I have trouble recognizing 'cool' dialogue, although I supposedly write it at times.
SOOO ... I scoured the Internet to find out what writers/directors were diagnosed or purported to have AS. Here's what I came up with:
1. STEVEN SPIELBERG (Diagnosed supposedly, but hard to pin down where and how)
2. STANLEY KUBRICK (postumously diagnosed, but sure fit the part, and a friend of Spielberg)
3. TIM BURTON (Never diagnosed that I know of, but has many, many indicators)
These were the almost sure bets. Less sure candidates included Quentin Tarantino, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, Alfred Hitchcock, and James Cameron.
Does anybody have any more info on any of these guys, whether just behaviors that confim/deny the possibility of AS, how they deal with it, or ANYTHING? (Including your own experiences with creating stories?) I'm very interested to hear, and not just for academic reasons. I am working very hard to adapt my quirkly mode of creation to be able to make top-quality films in a very, very competitive, stressful field. I can use any data you've got! |
I can't believe I just now, after having joined months ago, found this area. My dream job is to be a screenwriter for a drama or supernatural television show. I have written several fan factions, mainly around shows Charmed and Smallville. |

| Could Johnny Depp be AS or just have the traits? I read he had an obsession with lizards and talekd about them a lot when he was a kid and was a walking encyclopedia on them. I read he also suffers from anxiety. Those are the only things I know about him. I can remember someone mentioning to me on a yahoo group about him having it because she saw his name on a webpage that had a list of people with it. So it got open to keep my eyes out what i read about him and what he says about himself. Having two apsie common things isn't enough for me to say he has it. |

StarAngel,
Have you sent your screenplays to those shows? I've heard stories of people writing something for a show and sending it to them, then being hired to be a writer for the show. |

You know, I believe it. You never hear about him dating women. |
Sorry to ressurrect this dead thread with my long-inactive account, but I'm an obsessive Keanu fan and I have a pressing need to set the record straight. (yay pun)
So: Keanu is straight. Yes. He's said so, everyone who actually knows him - including gay men - says so, and if anything he is an extremely honest person, to the point of offending people unintentionally. When asked in a 1991 interview if he were gay, his reply was:
"No. *pause* ...But ya never know."
- which isn't exactly the kind of response a closeted gay would give. People have however described him as giving off asexual vibes.
Keanu also said that although he has nothing against gay people because there's "nothing wrong with being gay", he has never had sex with men and never intends to. A childhood friend of his recalled that Keanu used to have this endless string of girlfriends.
In November 1999, Keanu's girlfriend Jennifer Syme gave birth to a stillborn daughter, Ava Archer Syme Reeves. In April 2001, Jennifer died in a car crash; since then Keanu has shown a further increased reluctance to be in relationships. Meanwhile, his mother has been divorced four times and remarried, which may have contributed to his general skepticism of relationships in general.
Okay, that's all. Going away now. |

This is interesting. Do you have a theory that he has AS, or has he been diagnosed?
This gets to one of the reasons I started this thread: There seem to be as many as half a dozen directors who either have AS or might have it. But I've never heard of even one well-known actor or screenwriter who has AS. I find it very peculiar. |
Yes, Dan Aykroyd is officially diagnosed with AS. I think he publicly announced it a couple of years ago. But yeah, he is a definite Aspie. _________________ Jesus was an anarchist. |

In regard to the original posts discussion, I think if you want to make movies, then make movies. Try not to let your worries inhibit you. Have a go. There are all sorts of directors making all kinds of movies. If emotions aren't a strong point, then maybe you can make movies about other things....expressionless zombies, callous hipster robbers, robots that rid the earth of sentimental drivel...Do your own thing. _________________ Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul, and sings the tune without words, and never stops at all. -emily dickinson

| Steven Speilberg is diagnosed as an aspie; I'm not sure if George Lucas is, but I think he is an aspie. |
