The poor child suffocated. How can suffocation be a calm death!!! That form of calming down any child should never be permitted. How sad and how cruel that poor child suffered as he did!

Are you saying this was murder and not manslaughter? Again, I wonder what the ME would have to say about this. The condition of the body can speak volumes. Sounds like a very unpleasant and unfortunate death -no doubt- but I am not prepared to call it murder.

I have not said that at all. Making that type of an implication was not my purpose in my response. I just think some so-called remedies for dealing with special needs children are not in the best interest of the child.

You've slandered the adults involved. You have malicioudly implies that they murdered the boy in cold blood. You have made unfounded allegations of a very serious nature. This was all an emotional knee-jerk response.

When responses to posts look like this it is apparent that it takes growing up to realized most people never do. I say the child suffocated and you make claims that I said something malicious and said murder when in fact these are your words of choice. Way to go freedom of speech, let's malign both a situation and another individual. That is the American Way!

THE CANADIAN PRESS

MONTREAL–A Quebec coroner says a 9-year-old autistic boy died of suffocation after a teacher rolled him up in a heavy blanket to calm him down.

The death occurred in April at a school for children with special needs in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, about 40 kilometres south of Montreal.

A report by coroner Catherine Rudel-Tessier says Gabriel Poirier was placed on his stomach and then had a therapeutic blanket wrapped around him four times.

The report says teachers wanted to punish the child for being too noisy.

The young boy was left alone in the corner of a classroom, but when the teacher went to check 20 minutes later the child wasn't moving and was in a coma.

Therapeutic blankets, often stuffed with buckwheat or steel balls, have been used for several years to relax autistic children and prevent behavioural problems.

Keywords:

"punish" "20 minutes" "left alone" "placed on stomach"

Sometimes a more compassionate teacher and patient teacher is better than one who can boast about their college certificate.

If you can't handle different kids and want to "punish" them, maybe there should be a better screening process.

Also, I think the whole "If your school gets good grades the school gets better funding" program has in a sense backfired. It always starts out okay until it is revealed that there are flaws in such systems that either need further exceptions and a change in the program or a whole new program period.

Maybe you should try teaching autistic kids. I'd like to observe your patience and compassion.

Some kids are almost unteachable in an ordinary school setting.

The event happened at a school for special needs children. It was her whole job to teach autistic, and other disabled children. It wasn't just a regular classroom. Somehow, I failed to notice this the first time I read the article.

If she couldn't handle her job she should've quit, and found another. There's no excuse for this, as she had to have been trained, and educated in dealing with these types of children, and their behaviors. The process of cause, and effect as it's related to breathing is quite elementary. You wrap someone up in a blanket that weighs almost as much as they do from their head to their toes, and lie them face down they aren't going to be able to breath properly, if at all. Any adult had to know that in the least the boy would be very uncomfortable. There's no excuse in hurting an innocent child. I do think she ought to be punished. Somewhere a family grieves at the loss of their child, because of her, and her thoughtless actions. There's no "sorry" or do-overs. Their son is no more, just because God forbid, he was being noisy.

If I were in a special needs school, it wouldn't take much common sense to conclude that I would HAVE to have extra patience.

If I were prone to punishing kids by wrapping them up in blanket face down for 20 minutes, common sense would conclude that I had no common sense and should stay out of the classroom.
