Does anyone here besides me get annoyed when the dude you are talking to swears every sentence?
Or says "I oughta hit you with a 2 x 4" >.<

I don't swear a lot but it doesn't bother me when someone excessively curses.

yep. people who do not have a good command of the language tend to be lazy and just slap in an expletive rather than an explanation. i enjoy a well placed expletive every now and then myself, but there are some folks who just can't get a sentence out without one. which is pretty pathetic.

and yes, the 2x4 thing.... when i was a kid in our family the adults, when they'd get mad, used to say things like "i oughta kill you" or "i oughta strangle you" or "i shoulda drowned you at birth"... to them it was just a phrase they used instead of "i'm really angry right now" at us. i took it very literally and was scared half to death much of the time that they'd meant it exactly as they'd said it. i still find it offensive, if not threatening.

i would suggest that you point-blank tell the person saying "hit you with a two-by-four" that you don't appreciate threats of violence and that if they continue to use them you will cease to communicate with them (assuming you're willing to do that). if they come back with "you're over-reacting" you'll have to back it up with "no, i'm not. i find that tremendously offensive." and if they don't stop, you'll have to cut them off. because if they won't stop they don't give a flying flip about your feelings and are pretty much a waste of time, anyway. you deserve better.

good luck!

::STEREOTYPE ALERT!!::

I have an excellent command of the English language and still swear like the proverbial sailor. In fact, nearly every other professional communicator I met in my long career in broadcasting did the same. It was amusing to note how the flying expletives would cease utterly the second that red ON AIR light came on. I'm not sure why some of us toss out the blue bombs like used tissue (maybe growing up in the home of a Baptist minister just made it an act of rebellion), but it doesn't have anything to do with not having more appropriate words at my disposal. I don't think George Carlin would be at a loss for words without them, but how much classic comedy would have never existed...

In the case at hand, however, it sounds like the personality involved uses swear words to convey an attitude of aggression, in order to sound tough - a bully with a verbal macho swagger. Doesn't sound like someone I'd even want to converse with.

Or maybe you're just chattin' wit' Jason Mewes. Snoogans.

well, i ~could~ have said that folks who swear like crusty the sailor were immature and were hoping to prove to themselves (or those around them) that they were "cool" or "tough" or "one of the guys" by using socially deviant language in every other phrase - or so that they could be "different" and "above social control" or something of that ilk... Wink

in my experience it's been those who were less than expert with the language who tend to insert expletives every other word. there aren't all that many professional broadcasters in the greater scheme of humanity, really. so, stereotype in your eyes or not, i'd be willing to give the miscreant the benefit of the doubt and go with verbally illiterate rather than emotionally deficient, to be kind to them. either that or they're just freaking lazy. Wink Wink

ps - george carlin does it to make a buck.

If someone wants to hit me with a 2x4, I'd probably stop talking to them at that point...

No one has never done excessive swearing to me on IM but I have seen it in real life. It does bother me. It tells me they have lot of anger issues and they let lot of things bother them.
