I've been reading some posts from some members here than people down here in the south aren't very accepting of people like us, at first, I didn't believe it, but lately, I've been starting to think that's true. _________________ http://roygerdodger721.livejournal.com

If you're autistic, and lived here in the south, you would probably get ignored. _________________ http://roygerdodger721.livejournal.com |

we have a time-honored tradition of being incestuous, inebriated, or insane. You'll blend right in...
Honestly, I think the vast majority of people in the world don't even know what AS is. |

The only difference between the Southern states and the northern states is that Southerners are (generally speaking) more friendly and helpful to strangers (that's not a stereotype, I've repeatedly experienced it). Well, that and the fact that we're an occupied country and the yanks are in the US voluntarily.
Seriously, get over that stereotyping, it's crap. I went to high school with a girl from Michigan who was amazed that Southerners wore shoes and didn't all have a corncob pipe growing out of their mouths. If you form your picture of the South from Deliverance, you probably believe all Eastern Europeans are just like Borat. Please note: Larry the Cable Guy is from Nebraska, not from the Southern states. _________________ "I don't mean to sound bitter, cynical or cruel - but I am, so that's how it comes out."

I think a lot of these stereotypes, are just that. Though it is funny you mentioned the movie Deliverance. My dad was posted in Washington in the late 60s early 70s. He made a road trip down the east cost. He said whilst traveling thought a part very rural West Virginia (which I don't particularly think is southern) it was like the movie Deliverance. He said he he went for one village to another, they were suspicious of anyone from outside, even the near by villages were considered 'foreign', a lot of the carried shot guns around and would point them at his car as he drove by.
It has probably completely changed though. |

I had a wonderful time living in the south (Houston). I live in central Indiana now, and it's had its ups and downs, depending on where you're at. The bigger areas are okay, but watch out for the small towns! They're the cliquest, most prejudice areas of them all! _________________ "We got the feet back!"- Ruth Cole, 'The Door in the Floor' |

Really?
I don't know about the autism but when I went in some states of the south, I found people were more friendlier than up north.
Louisanna, Georgia, Florida....maybe it depends on what specific location. I never been to other places like Texas or Alabama so I don't know.
But even with AS, I felt like I was more ignored here and in some northern states than in some of those southern states. I just remember having more interaction with some of the peoples of the south even more so when I was in Louisanna. _________________ Oh you can't help that. We're all mad here.

They 'uz prob'ly just afeared he 'uz one-a them damn hippies. Them hippies kilt a bunch a folk out there'n Californy, y'know. Been a sh*tload of 'em up thar at Yasgur's farm lately - he can't get shed of 'em, all dancin aroun' nekkid'n whatall...
There's a smidgeon of truth underlying any stereotype, that's how they get started (and what keeps Jeff Foxworthy rich). The point is, you can't assume the behaviors of an entire region's population because of the behaviors of a subset.
Again I am compelled to point out that West Virginia is not a Southern State - they split off from Virginia to keep from seceding from the Union. _________________ "I don't mean to sound bitter, cynical or cruel - but I am, so that's how it comes out."
