For me, it's because I don't want to be treated like any kind of retard and have Aspie stereotypes used on me, because I don't fit the profile just like that; there's a lot more to it. And believe it or not people do do these things. _________________ God protects fools. Be a fool.

With me:
1. I don't want them to have something to use against me.
2. I don't want them to think it is a copout.
3. I don't want them to assess everything through that lens.
4. I don't want them to think I am a hypochondriak, etc... because I haven't been actually diagnosed. |

My experiences have all been negative.
1. Many deny I have AS and pretend I am "normal".
2. Some have no idea how to treat me and then act even weirder and even more incomprehensible.
3. Some tell me I use it as an excuse, for instance when I say "I don't like going to parties".
So no more. It is enough for me and my husband to know. |

I put "other". For me, the number one problem I run into is that at least half the people out there probably don't even know what Asperger's Syndrome is. Then you also get "Assburger syndrome LOL what's that??" .. urggh, stupid people out there.. |

I usually don't tell people unless I know I'm very friendly with them. Otherwise my fear is that when they talk to me they think about "someone with AS", based on the stereotypes at best, rather than me.
AS is not a dominant feature of my conscious day-to-day life. It is usually not necessary for me to say anything about my diagnosis. |

| In secondary school the reason why I kept it almost entirely to myself is somewhat more complicated. There was one other guy with "Asperger's Syndrome" in the year who had far more cognitive difficulties than I had and had to be consistently monitored. In short, my impression was that this other guy was a case study of Asperger's Syndrome for everyone else. |

I'm a contract worker in a right-to-work state; I have all the job security of a Mayfly. Around these parts, I'd have to actually explain what the term means... |

Very few people where I live even know what AS is. I've explained it to one person in college and he just told me to act normal. Oh okay, I'll just flip a switch and turn it off.
It doesn't do any good to tell anyone around here. _________________ Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.

| It says way too much about you. It's like you're telling someone about your deepest concerns regarding yourself. I don't want to be treated any differently. |

I don't tell anyone because of the stereotypes and they might assume I have them.
They might make false assumptions about me thinking I have all the symptoms from the books and from webpages on it.
They might not believe me because I am too normal, not abnormal enough. _________________ http://www.factcheck.org/

I often don't tell people because they have their own twisted view of autism and asperger's in their mind, and I don't match it exactly. The most annoying thing in the world is hearing "you don't have asperger's" from people who have trouble pronouncing the word.
Other times people, even people I have known for a long time, treat me like I am some sort of ticking bomb. I don't know how I can make this distinction, but like a poo bomb. I believe it is that they don't seem to want to get any on them. They act as though they are suddenly in sticky air. |
